How much am I missing out on by not ranching?

I don't play on a daily and have even gone long spurts without playing at all. I know when ranching was first introduced, and perhaps even still now, if you didn't get on to ranch every day, a lot of your work would be wasted, so I never even bothered getting into it. I haven't even crafted the bell.
But now, with the horses from the Highlands expansion, I'm half interested in getting into breeding some horses just for variety visually and perhaps to obtain a few neat traits, though I've never been super hardcore about breeding for traits in games.

So, I'm posed with the dilemma of if it's really worth it to get into ranching if you don't play daily, especially as a casual gamer who doesn't even put focus into quests consistently. I just tend to run around, lol

I'm designing this room from long distance (mostly) with only a short visit to do the painting soon before officially moving in later on. I've already decided to paint the trims black and the ceiling a nice deep green, then design the rest of the room in a darker vintage/industrial look. However, I'm trying to figure out if I should choose silver or gold for the little accents. Not for any major furniture, as all furniture will be wood and black. Just for small, decorative pieces.

I personally prefer silver, but I'm worried it won't look good against the warmer wood tones.
