What is Shonen?

The Japanese word shōnen (少年; Japanese pronunciation: [ɕoːnen] lit. "few years"), meaning "young boy" historically referred to juveniles in a general sense and was used by the Japanese publishing industry until the end of the 19th century to designate publications aimed at children and young people. The word shifted to its current usage of referring specifically to media aimed at adolescent boys, beginning with the practice of segmenting periodicals, especially manga magazines, by sex and age-specific target groups, which was established at the beginning of the 20th century and accelerated starting in the 1960s. This segmentation system is now openly used as a categorization system by manga publishers and extends into works that are adapted from manga, such as anime.

My character has X genre… can it still be shonen?

Yes Shonen as a whole is genre as well as a demographic. This can also be implemented with other types of themes and genres such as romance, sports, crime, slice of life etc.

My character wears skimpy clothes or is very provocative can it still be shonen?

Yes as long as the character doesn’t show any kind of explicit genitalia is fine.

Ecchi content is allowed in the subreddit.

My character story has a heavy can it still be Shonen?

Yes Shonen has many stories that contain heavy topics and dark themes however please keep in mind that it needs to be very well written and sensible for the audience to digest such trauma the character has come through.

What is the theme of Shonenside?

Shonenside theme is about OC’s who look like they belong in the Shonen Jump or they look like they would fit in or look alike.

Shonenside is basically its own thing to have a lot of the most interesting fascinating OC’s actioned pack and cool designs (and beautiful women.)

Shonenside is a community that deviates from most copies of r/originalcharacter and tries to focus on a single theme… Shonen.

Shikai’s name: Ume ni Usagi

The ability of this Shikai is that Mei can hop anywhere and float anywhere she wants without any reiatsu concentration on her feet.

Another ability is that the more times she hops the faster and stronger her kicks get. Basically she will be able to travel through high speeds. Her speed can even make her reach through the moon! (Allegedly).
