Research Advert: Prevalence of Performance Enhancing Drug Use in the Sport of Strongwoman

[post has been approved by a moderator]

Dear Members, my name is Dr Andrew Richardson and I am currently co-supervising a student who's research [link - https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/teesside/pedstrongwomansurvey ] is looking at strongwoman athletes perceptions of performance-enhancing drug (PED) use in their sport.

The student is called Becca Worgan and runs a very popular podcast called "Strongwoman Highs" on Spotify which many of you would be aware of.

We are researching this topic as PED use in strength sports is a topic that gets a lot of discussion, but there's very little research on it, and almost nothing that focuses on strongwoman athletes.

This survey aims to change that by exploring how common PED use is, what drugs are being used, whether athletes are accessing harm reduction information and topics such as stigma. We are recruiting all strongwoman athletes/competitors and does not matter if you have or have not used PEDs. The survey caters for both non-PED users and PED-users.

The goal isn't to judge anyone, it's to gather honest, anonymous data so we can better understand what's actually happening in the sport and start addressing the gaps in research around women's health in strength sports.

I'd really appreciate it if you could share the link with your friends, gym members, peers, athletes and those in your networks who would be interested in taking part in this survey.

I would like to thank the moderator for letting me post this survey here.

Thank you to everyone who has already completed the survey, if you haven't please take part and share it onto your friends and fellow athletes to complete please.

Best wishes

Andrew

Dying to be Successful? Revisiting the Goldman Dilemma at the Enhanced Games

Hi there, my name is Dr Andrew Richardson. I have been given moderator permission to share this survey into the forum.

Could you all please spare 5 minutes to complete a research survey regarding the Enhanced Games?

The Enhanced Games is a new sports festival/contest which will openly legalise a level of performance enhancement drug use (but with the potential reward of large sums of prize money). This project is recruiting athletes to answer several hypothetical scenarios to them that pose varying levels of risk vs several levels of reward.

Link to survey: https://app.onlinesurveys.jisc.ac.uk/s/newcastle/enhanced-games

The scenarios are based upon what is known as the ‘Goldman Dilemma’ and has been posed to athletes across a range of sports since the early 1980’s.

The aims are:

  1. To recruit an appropriate number of athletes to complete the survey who may potentially be
    - competitors at the inaugural Enhanced Games (May 2026).
    - or consider themselves to be future competitors at the next Enhanced Games
    - or just competitive athletes (at all levels current or retired) who want to express their views about the Enhanced Games

All athletes are welcome and we encourage all abilities and levels and interest of the games to participate.

  1. To ascertain the current level of acceptance of a Faustian Bargain by Enhanced Games athletes through use of ‘Goldman Dilemma’-type questions.

Researchers Dr Bryce Dyer and Dr Andrew Richardson would like to invite athletes across to complete a short questionnaire to ask about how far they would go to be successful in their sport in the Enhanced Games

We will focus responses from Swimming, Weightlifting and Athletics (100m sprint) as these are events at the games but other athletes can respond too.

The questionnaire will only take 3-4 minutes to complete. We are looking forward to your responses.

I have a LinkedIn post on the survey as well if you wish to send that to your friends, peers or fellow athletes and network.

Thanks for taking the time to read and have a lovely day.

Best wishes

Andrew
