Evolution of the Turkey- Timely Turkey question - For the ornithologically inclined
I work in Advertising/ Media so this is way beyond my expertise . Although ...there are many Turkeys in that industry.
I understand the naming confusion with the country , the North American bird and Guinea fowl . We do that all the time. Like there have NEVER been "Buffalo" in the US or Canada . I'm wondering , how are endemic North American turkeys related to Guinea fowl ? They're both galliforms , but Guinea Fowl originate in Africa. I always just " assumed " they must go back pre Pangea . But...I must be wrong , I " think " turkeys have only been around 20 million years or so . And Pangea split around 200 million years ago . So how are they the same order ? I didn't think taxonomy considered both convergent and divergent evolution . If anyone knows , ideally before Thanksgiving, that'd be great...so that at dinner I can talk turkey :)
Thanks
