how are small businesses paying overseas vendors without getting buried in wire fees and admin?

we’ve been working with more vendors outside the us as the business has grown, and international payments have turned into one of those operational things i didn’t think much about at first. every new vendor seems to have slightly different payment details, and then there are wire fees, exchange rates, and keeping track of which payments have actually gone through. it’s manageable with a couple of vendors, but it gets messy pretty quickly as the list grows.

i’ve been comparing options for international vendor payments since we’re starting to work with more suppliers outside the US. i’ve looked at melio and a few other payment platforms, mainly trying to understand how other startups are handling this without building a complicated process around it.

right now, the main thing i’m trying to avoid is having international payments become another recurring admin task as we scale.

Started actually thinking about using a vpn for security after my friend called me out at a cafe

My friend and I were both working from a cafe last week and the moment he connected to the wifi he turned his VPN on. I just connected and started working like normal. He looked at me like I'd left my front door open and walked away. He explained that public wifi is basically an open network where anyone connected can potentially see what you're doing. I'd heard this before and filed it under "probably fine." Sitting there it suddenly felt a lot less fine.

Now I'm actually looking into a vpn for security, mostly for working outside the house, and immediately hit a wall of identical claims. Fastest, most private, no logs, military grade. Every service sounds the same and every review site feels like it's just ranking whoever pays them. For those who actually use one, what made you choose yours and is there anything worth knowing before picking one?

got a bad cough this week and realized there's no one to hear me if it turns into something worse

not trying to be dramatic. it's just a cough, probably nothing. but i was lying in bed the other night hacking away and this thought crept in that if it got bad in the middle of the night, nobody would know. no roommate to hear it through the wall. no one to say hey you sound rough, want some tea. just me and the ceiling and the sound of my own lungs.

i've lived alone for three years and mostly love it. the freedom, the quiet, not having to explain myself to anyone. but every now and then something small like a cough flips it and the same quiet that usually feels like peace starts feeling like being unreachable.

made myself the tea. took some medicine. set my phone next to the pillow which did nothing practical but somehow helped. felt a little silly about it in the morning when the cough was better and the sun was up. but yeah. the small vulnerable moments are the ones that get me, way more than the big lonely ones ever do.

anyone else get hit by this when you're a bit under the weather on your own? how do you handle those late night what-if thoughts?
