Watch out for spoilers, obviously.

Dexter - Season 7 Finale, to Season 8

Season 7 is one of my favorite seasons, and it would definitely rank higher for me if it weren’t for the fact that its continuation is the WORST season in the entire series. After cleaning up the Ukrainian mob and Debra (more or less) coming to terms with her brother’s identity, her boss puts him in her crosshairs. Eventually, they all end up in the same shipping container, and Debra has to make a brutal decision: kill Dexter and save LaGuerta, losing the person closest to her, OR kill LaGuerta, turning herself into a murderer of an innocent person so Dexter can continue his destructive vigilante games? Dexter does the honorable thing and tells Debra to shoot him.

And just like that, the decision is made, and LaGuerta takes a bullet. Debra sobs over the body of her friend, while Dexter is devastated by what has happened. They don’t even have a moment to grieve. They arrive at their friend’s party devastated and late, still with blood on their hands, forced to exchange looks with the friends of the woman they just took a life from.

When I finished Season 7, I was ready for Season 8 to pick up immediately after that scene. Someone would discover LaGuerta’s body, the entire department would rush from the party to the crime scene, and gradually more and more suspicion would fall on Dexter, until the legendary manhunt that I think everyone had been waiting for finally began.

But the writers decided otherwise. Season 8 begins a full SIX MONTHS after the events of the party. Angel has already come to terms with her death, we never got to see Debra descend into madness because she already has, Masuka makes jokes about LaGuerta's death, and you won’t hear anything interesting about that woman after the third episode of a season that:

  • Retcons the most interesting plot threads from previous seasons, including completely destroying Harry’s character.
  • Uses basically every other antagonist for shock value or as a plot device.
  • Brings Hannah back and rushes through both her redemption arc and Dexter’s romantic storyline.
  • Its moral is basically that Dexter is always fucked because he gets rid of perverts and murderers, and even when he tries to quit killing and has good intentions, life kicks him even harder.
  • Kills Debra and makes Dexter run off into the middle of nowhere, far away from the woman he had just promised a wonderful future and from the son he left with a nanny for the last three seasons, only to abandon him for the rest of his childhood.

Jesus fucking Christ.

The Boys: Season 5 - Episode 6 to Episode 7-8

After five episodes of fucking around, the plot finally started moving. We witness a completely insane plot twist, as Soldier Boy gives his pathetic son the serum that will make him immortal. Soldier Boy is fully aware of the consequences of what he’s doing, so what makes him go through with it? Don’t pretend you don’t know, it’s already become a meme. I’ll admit, seeing Homelander firing lasers into the sky was absolutely breathtaking. The entire cast was standing out in an open field, completely exposed to an attack. They could run, but what good would that do when Homelander can massacre them from a distance? And what difference does it make when he can now move faster than the planet itself is moving around the Sun? Everyone was hopeless. And there were only two episodes left until the finale. How were our heroes going to survive? Or rather: would they even survive at all? Going into Episode 7, I was convinced that at least half the cast would die. Maybe Starlight would sacrifice herself in battle, maybe Butcher would abandon everyone again just to survive, or maybe...

Yeah, fucking right. The next episode starts several days later in a completely different location. Wait, how did they get out of there? Nobody knows. They probably dabbed up Homelander and went their separate ways. Okay, so how did immortality change Homelander? He banned soy milk and killed the president. He also killed a terribly written character played by an IDF soldier, but that was an incredibly obvious move, because the same guy had spent the last few episodes talking about what a beautiful future lay ahead of him.

In Episode 8, they SLIMED IMMORTAL HOMELANDER with the power of love, or some other bullshit.

And Soldier Boy? Homelander put him back into a coma. And that’s it.

See you in the spin-off, which apparently got most of the budget.

SPOILERS: ALL DEXTER SHOWS - Ranking every major character's death by the execution and the impact it left on me

https://preview.redd.it/xg9xkd604j6h1.png?width=1140&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9e84df2d3ee7d0deca1b4c875023a3b5ea0f9ae

In case some of you don't know, by "execution" I don't mean the method by which they were killed, but rather how the writers handled their deaths. Below, I'll explain some of my choices.

1. Camilla Figg
I'd bet a good portion of you don't even remember this lovely character. She was one of the first people who knew Dexter's secret and the one who forced him to question Harry's Code in relation to her death. Above all, I appreciate the respect with which the writers handled her storyline, especially when compared to Debra's.

The circumstances were almost identical: Character X is essentially on their deathbed and will never be able to enjoy life again, so someone has to make the difficult choice of ending their suffering. The difference is that when Dexter condemned Debra to share a graveyard with pedophiles, murderers, and countless other criminals before abandoning his family, he handled Camilla's situation with dignity and compassion.

Oh, and one more thing. In the very same episode where Camilla died, Debra basically said, "If I ever end up in that condition, please don't make me suffer." Foreshadowing completely wasted.

2. Brother Sam
There's something frustrating about his death, but that's exactly what makes it feel so real. The lessons he taught Dexter seemed to die with him as the show reminded us how reality actually works. The aftermath of Brother Sam's death, along with Dexter killing his murderer, is the cherry on top. It's a shame that Dexter's deeper religious reflections basically ended here. For the rest of the season, we were stuck with a Reddit/4chan-tier pseudo-intellectual critique of religion that desperately wanted to sound profound but rarely had anything meaningful to say.

And I'm saying that as an atheist.

3. Dexter Morgan
The show could've ended here, but I'd have to fight off an army of Resurrection fans to defend that argument. I like Resurrection myself, so please, spare me.

4. Paul Bennett
Watching him beg Rita to look for evidence proving Dexter framed him, while we as the audience know he's telling the truth, is honestly heartbreaking. Of course, it would be a lot more heartbreaking if he weren't such an abusive piece of shit.

5. The Skinner and the Doomsday Killer
Both deaths rely entirely on plot armor and ridiculously over-the-top action sequences, yet somehow I love it. Dexter casually swoops in and saves the day in both situations.

6. Angel Batista
Batista's death (and pretty much everything that happened in Resurrection) is not only further proof that Harrison should stay as far away from his father as possible, but it's also dangerously close to peak laziness in terms of writing.

This isn't the Angel I know.

The Angel I remember would've given Dexter one chance to take down the bad guys after being freed in the finale, and maybe even let him walk afterward. He would've forgiven him after seeing the results of his work. Batista always cared about justice first and foremost, and I'm convinced that after nearly ten years following Season 8, he would've learned to value that above his personal feelings.

His death feels like a forced tearjerker and a complete neglect of the Dexter-Harrison relationship. I'm convinced that if it weren't for plot armor, Harrison would've ended up on my tier list instead.

7. The cop from Season 6 who died in Season 7
What was his name again?

8. Miguel Prado
I KNOW. I KNOW. BUT HEAR ME OUT.

Against all odds, despite all my strengths and all my efforts, I cannot remember the actual scene where this guy dies. What I do remember is how absurdly easy it was for Dexter to take him out.

This is a freaking District Attorney we're talking about - one of the most powerful figures in Miami's legal system, with deep connections to Miami Metro PD.

My favorite scene was when Miguel actually managed to fuck Dexter over in ways he never could've imagined.

Well, I wish it was.

None of it had any consequences. NONE.

LaGuerta shed a few tears, and Dexter shed Miguel's blood after kidnapping him straight from her house. The house of his friend. His boss. A former prosecutor.

For fuck's sake.

Miguel is easily one of my Top 5 Dexter antagonists, but the entire endgame - the point where they fully turned against each other - was way too short and way too easy to resolve.

Absolutely terrible.

Radio stations are the most underrated part of GTA V, and the series overall

https://preview.redd.it/2d2h0jp2hn5h1.png?width=1140&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed66f10f97c8a76f88cf36d3248cf04d8fb2a5ad

GTA V would have a drastically different vibe if it weren't for its choice of music. My favorites have to be Channel X for how well it captures the California vibe, Non-Stop Pop for its literally flawless tracklist, and West Coast Classics for the tribute it pays to the hip-hop genre. What's yalls favorite radio station, and why?
