Yriel - final update 🥳

Yriel - final update 🥳

As requested and promised in this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/mainecoons/comments/1tnnoo0/yriel_a_story_and_a_warning/ here's the final update about Yriel.

Today he had his last checkup at the vet. He recovered almost completely, only two tiny spots at his old (first) suture are a bit productive (discharging really tiny amounts) so he has to take antibiotics for 5 more days and then he should be fine.

No more cage, no more cone or flower, he is a very happy and very clean cat again now.

Thanks for all the comments, wishes, requests for updates and all the love for Yriel, it was much appreciated!
Lots of love to all of you coonie parents out there!

Oh and please ignore the mess in the background 😅

Klinik: Ansturm auf Transgender Center

https://tirol.orf.at/stories/3357117/

Happy pride month!

It was also a lesson to admire imperfection.

Yriel short care video

Since he is doing great and getting better every day I decided to give him a „bath“ similar to like a fellow cat would do. His flower doesn‘t allow him to clean himself properly and he looked horrible.

Seems he liked it.

Oh and please ignore the messy blanket, we clean it every afternoon.

White spots in the back are the sucralan he gets 😅.

Yriel - A story and a warning

CN: Illness, surgery, escalating health issues.

NOTE: TLDR below. The original text was written entirely by myself. For accessibility reasons, I am using AI to translate it to english.

My boy Yriel is now 1 year and 3 months old and has been with me for almost 1 year.
He is healthy, weighs what he should, drinks enough, and is fed exclusively with very high-quality wet food due to a poultry intolerance.

The following events took place within three days:
On a Wednesday evening he ate for the last time and afterwards used the litter box normally – both stool and urine, nothing unusual.
Thursday morning, a public holiday, he vomited for the first time around 5 a.m. Yellowish and foamy, a few tiny food remnants, nothing remarkable.
About an hour later a second time, again yellowish. At that point I still thought he might just be hungry.
At feeding time he didn’t eat anything; I reassured myself that he was simply feeling nauseous.
From that moment on I started to notice that he was changing his sleeping spot roughly every half hour to an hour and withdrawing somewhat. In addition, he vomited a total of five times, counting the first two.
After the fifth time I called the veterinary clinic.
They were not overly alarmed either, but recommended that we come in.
In the afternoon he was examined; the suspected diagnosis was a trichobezoar – a hairball he couldn’t get out. As a precaution he was given contrast medium so that his intestines could be checked at the follow-up appointment the next day.

He showed slight improvement after the administered pain medication and stopped vomiting.
Until the next morning he neither ate nor drank any water, nor did he pass any stool.

The X-ray at the follow-up appointment the next morning was unremarkable; the intestine was clear. Blood was drawn and fluids were administered as he was already mildly dehydrated.
His inflammation markers were slightly elevated and a sharp sound could be heard in his lungs. He received antibiotics, pain medication again, and was allowed to go home.

The third day. Yriel still hadn’t eaten or passed any stool, but at least we managed to get him to drink quite sufficiently after I remembered that he loves playing with lukewarm water and occasionally drinks it too.

From that moment I felt hopeful and thought Yriel would recover quickly.
He was brought to the clinic for a check-up, and from there things became turbulent.
A further X-ray revealed that his small intestine was thickened and his bowel appeared not to be functioning.
At noon he was operated on. He had an intussusception of the small intestine, and part of it had already become necrotic.

From that moment I was deeply worried whether he would ever come home again.

He came through this ordeal relatively well, but had to be opened up a second time a few days later because he had rejected the absorbable suture material of the fascial suture, meaning the stitches had to be removed, the wound cleaned, and re-sutured.

Since Saturday, Yriel has been home.
He has lost a lot of weight and looks rather rough, but things are looking up.
He is eating, drinking, passing urine and stool, and is the bravest cat in the world when it comes to receiving his medication.

I am glad I did not wait out the public holiday but went to the clinic with him straight away, and that the intestinal obstruction was recognised in time.

TLDR: seemingly harmless vomiting escalated into a life threatening emergency within 3 days.

Take seemingly harmless symptoms seriously. It is better to go to the vet clinic one time too many with your pet.
