Been getting into learning about the Dao and apparently “Red Dust” is a common metaphor. Mainly about the material world / human created chaos. One example is describing the mind as a cup of water mixed with dirt/red dust. When you meditate the dust settles at the bottom and you are able to see through it, however when you are bogged down with day to day worries the cup is stirred and the water is murky. People who start meditation sometimes get spooked by the stillness and almost crave the murky chaos.
The chorus is Woods trapped in that chaos that he’s driven towards, but in each desire he realizes what he is looking for isn’t in that particular form. It’s not the money he’s after it’s the rush, it’s not the weed its more of a ritual, it’s not the desire for money it’s the hole that it’s filling, it’s not the heat (general feeling/energy he’s after) it’s the dust (opaque chaos that makes all of his decisions alright)
He also embodies the principle of Wu Wei (translated as effortless action or non-doing) in this track. “Sometimes It’s best to just circle the block” basically just pretend you are on a walk instead of going to do something nefarious. “I was in the ceiling when they swept the building” In hiding and doing nothing he was able to not get caught up in something that sent people to prison.
With all that being said I barely know anything about Daoism. And am probably misinterpreting shit on both sides, but even so the best metaphors come from misinterpretations.
