I was gifted this one probably 14-15 years ago, and may still have never come across it on my own otherwise.

It’s a totally unique project by Chris Kirkley (Sahel Sounds), where he traveled around Mali with his ears open to current, local music being played at max volume on crappy flip phones in public spaces. He’d ask the people playing the songs to send him the mp3 along with anything they knew about the artist.

The liner notes reflect everything from stories about the songs by the musicians themselves to a bare bones knowledge of where the song originated and its mp3 track name.

Really no other way these random underground tracks from places like Cote D’Ivoire, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, etc would ever arrive at the general public’s ears— everything from hip hop to Arabian-Indie type tracks.

There are a lot of incredibly impressive setups shared here, but the humble addition of this side shelving for the turntable makes my simple library feel like home.

What would you do: Sour Discogs transaction over the winter, PayPal remediation in my favor but I had to send the record back. Just got returned to me 5 months later unable to forward/unclaimed.

Mavis celebrated her 16th Independence Day with a 37-stair descent to the lake, quick swim, and sunny snooze. Despite weakening back legs, she has so much ambitious spark!

A great circular moment in this hobby: 20 years ago, a beat up copy of this album was the first record I ever played; today, a clean 1970 UK copy is finally on the turntable.

When I bought this house 20 years ago, there was a small office room I thought would be a cool ‘analog library’: a place for books, and a place to set up a turntable and start listening to records.

The table was a brand new ATLP120, but the speakers and receiver were crusty hand-me-downs from my parents’ attic. Along with the gear, my folks and their best friends pulled their records out of storage for me to have and listen to.

In one of the boxes was a hammered late-70s Warner Brothers pressing of Black Sabbath’s self titled. It was the first record I put through the new system— it crackled and hissed its way into the rainstorm and first punches of “Black Sabbath”, and man… THAT was one instant I wish I could relive; it was just the coolest thing in existence at that moment.

As I got more into the hobby, I hit this early-middle phase where I was infatuated with having NEW pressings of everything, so the old crusty WB Sabbath was jettisoned for some random ‘Earmark’ repress.

Now a couple decades on, I’ve been hoping for a while to honor that first record by replacing the repress for a non-crusty but OG 1970 Vertigo UK version. After a few years of keeping my eyes peeled, the right moment came along and now I feel like this album has come full circle in my library to a copy that I know I’ll hold onto for a very, very long time.

Diagnosis help: ATPL120 turntable > Onkyo integrated amp receiver > Audioengine A5+, getting only one sound channel to the speakers via RCA-RCA OR RCA-1/8". Is it the Receiver?

This is a well-established setup; the turntable and receiver/amp were purchased in 2007, the original Audioengine speakers several years later. Nothing has been relocated or fiddled with.

Up until this issue, the A5+ powered speakers had dual-inputs: a 1/8" - 1/8" from the computer in the room, and a RCA - RCA from the receiver. All was good.

A few weeks ago, out of nowhere, I only had audio from one speaker when coming from the turntable. Computer remained in stereo.. Flip-flopping the RCA inputs switched the audible speaker, but I was only able to gain one.

Foolish, foolish me; I blamed the speaker inputs and used the situation as a chance to get a brand new pair of A5+ speakers for the turntable, which also gives me the ability to relocate this thing to the living room. Speakers arrive, connect RCA-RCA... single channel audio still.

Switched to a Blue Jeans RCA - 1/8" I had kicking around. Still single channel, though if I pull the 1/8" connected partially out I can get both speakers but in mono output (instruments or vocals on a single channel are missing).

I hooked the RCAs from the turntable directly to the powered speaker, bypassing the receiver. I got stereo audio, but full volume was barely comfortable listening volume.

»» Am I on the right track to assume that one of the line-out ports on the receiver has given up? If so, is this something that's a modest repair bill or am I better off replacing the receiver entirely for a new hifi-specific amp? (It wasn't an expensive unit back in '07). If there are any other tests I should try, I aprecciate any feedback and advice! Thank you!

A weekend exploring South Jersey: tiny pines, lazy diners, secluded beaches, and horseshoes in heat

Despite rainy weather last weekend, took a little trip around the southern edge of our state; first a stop near Stafford Forge to go look for the fabled patch of Pygmy pines (one of the only sections of the Pinelands where adult trees barely crack 3 feet in height).

From there, the rest of our time was in Salem and Cumberland counties, exploring the secluded Bayshore beaches and quieter parts of the state.

This time of the year is when horseshoe crabs emerge onto the beaches in this area in the thousands, looking to mate and lay eggs in the sand. Many get stranded upside down during the incoming tide— those with damaged tails or ones who get flipped and filled with sand are really properly stuck, so we helped close to a thousand crabs right themselves and get back to the bay to take another shot next tide cycle. Very rewarding, and a win-win for both the crabs and the migrating shorebirds who feed on their eggs!

It doesn’t need to be said, but the Garden State is so bountiful with phenomenal, sincere, diverse cuisine; however, my wife’s birthday is coming up and we’ve talked a handful of times about finding more sophisticated Mexican or Indian spots.

Mexican food is too-often homogenated into a casual atmosphere or Tex-Mex menu… delicious, sure, but Mexico City is known for having some really sophisticated chefs (and more than a half dozen Michelin restaurants). I feel like I have no reference point for the country’s cuisine outside of enchiladas, tacos, and some attempts at mole sauce, and would LOVE to find a place that is cooking authentic but high-level fare.

On the Indian front, I appreciate that the vast majority of Indian restaurants I’ve visited make reasonable attempts to feel a touch on the fine dining side (decor and service primarily), but often the menus are quite similar. Again, I have no basis for understanding but I have to imagine there’s chefs cooking Indian food that steps above the classic korma, saag, makhani, curry, or biryani.

I’m sure you guys can deliver some knockouts… looking forward to the replies!
