Why a "No" Vote is Logically the Best Choice (Even if You Like the Contract)

Firstly, this is not a place to bash anyone for their voting choices. Your vote belongs entirely to YOU. However, if you are currently on the fence or know someone who is, I believe there is now a highly logical path toward voting "No" on this contract.

It seems clear to me, and virtually everyone I have spoken to, that the overwhelming sentiment is that this contract does not have the majority required to be ratified. If your personal experience suggests otherwise and you believe there is a majority that would vote yes, feel free to disregard the rest of this post.

However, if you are feeling and hearing the same sentiment, I implore you to talk to your coworkers tomorrow and speak about the merits of voting no as a group. Even if someone personally views the contract as acceptable, a "Yes" vote now will weaken the union's position in the next round of negotiations, which now seem inevitable.

Crucially, voting "No" is also the logical position for those who wish to avoid a strike come October. A Strike Authorization paired with an overwhelming "No" vote now will send a much stronger message to Boeing and the negotiating team, and give SPEEA more leverage at the table. If we can get Boeing to improve their offer meaningfully, we will have at least one more chance to vote before our current contract expires and a strike becomes possible.

A stronger no vote now, increases the likelihood we will receive an acceptable offer before Oct 6th. This is the best course of action to secure a good deal agreeable to most, and lower our chances of going on strike.

If you are unsure, you might want to hold on to your vote for now!

To preface, I fully respect your right to vote whichever way. But if you’re undecided, here’s why it may be in your interest to wait.

SPEEA staff have repeatedly said, the worst outcome we can get as a union is a weak No. As the voting period starts tomorrow, talk to your coworkers in the coming weeks, see what the general consensus seems to be.

If you are undecided or are slightly leaning yes, but the offer is looking unlikely to prevail here, a resounding no vote will give our Negotiators a better, unified voice at the table. Last thing we want is a 50% + 1 “No” where Boeing can just tell us to pound sand and send us a same or worse counter offer.

Again, I am not bashing Yes voters, it is up to you to decide if this first offer is good or not good enough. However, if you’re unsure, talk to folks around you, make sure we avoid a “weak No”!

Fact Check: IAM Strike was Economic

I’ve seen this argument among bots flooding the subreddits lately, and want to provide some facts.

Boeing has not had a strike that has been classified as a ULP strike, period. If you dispute this, I challenge you to show us the NLRB ruling for IAM in 2024 siding with IAM’s ULP claims prior to their return-to-work agreement. You can’t.

Have unions and company filed grievances that the NLRB could eventually litigate and rule on? Yes. But this is standard practice. Every single time, Boeing has settled with the union before the claims made it that far. Strikes hurt for every day it lasts.

For the 2-karma bots flooding this and other Boeing affiliated subreddits, please stop the misinformation and the fear mongering. Solidarity is our strength.

Contract Pulse Check

Unofficially, how are we SPEEA folks feeling about this contract? Hopefully it’s allowed here since this is subreddit has by far the most SPEEA presence on Reddit.

Clipping your nails at work?

Am I missing out on a chargeline we can use for this? If not, why are you hunching over a trash can at work clipping your nails loudly like a freak?

Give a damn!
