Tattoo session registered as nap
I thought this was pretty interesting. During my last tattoo session, I was conscious but trance-like meditative state. Breathing deeply, eyes closed, and being with the tattooing sensation rather than processing the pain.
I decided to dive deeper into “what is sleep?”
I thought it was quite interesting. ChatGPT’s response in italics.
Meditation/trance: conscious awareness may still be present, even if muted or spacious.
Sleep: awareness is usually reduced or disconnected, and the brain enters sleep-specific stages.
There’s also a grey zone. People can be “conscious” during some sleep-like states: lucid dreams, yoga nidra, hypnagogia, microsleeps, or deep meditation. So your experience sits in that interesting overlap where your body was sleep-like, but your mind still had some awareness.
So the clean answer is: sleep is not just unconsciousness; it’s a measurable physiological state. Your Whoop probably detected the body-side markers of sleep, not proof that your brain was actually asleep.
Anyone have experiences of using deep meditation to do things like manage sleep deprivation?
