Is it just us or is hospitality staffing getting REALLY hard in Toronto and Ottawa right now?

Is it just us or is hospitality staffing getting REALLY hard in Toronto and Ottawa right now?

We’re seeing restaurants and venues scrambling to find reliable people for upcoming shifts and events — especially Servers, Bartenders, Cooks, Dishwashers, and Bussers.

One team recently needed 50+ staff for coverage and still couldn’t fully fill all positions.

Feels like the industry is ramping up fast heading into the busy season and there’s a serious shortage of experienced hospitality workers right now.

If you’ve worked in restaurants, bars, catering, or events before and are looking for work or extra shifts, now’s honestly one of the best times to jump back in.

Would love to know if others in hospitality are seeing the same thing lately.

Lowkey… office culture can literally fall apart when nobody’s taking care of the small things behind the scenes.

Lowkey… office culture can literally fall apart when nobody’s taking care of the small things behind the scenes.

Cold coffee machine.
Empty snack station.
Messy lounge.
No supplies in the bathroom.
Overflowing garbage by 2PM.

People notice it immediately.

This Guest Services role is actually for someone who enjoys being the person that keeps everything running smoothly without needing the spotlight.

It’s part hospitality, part organization, part “office lifesaver.”

You’d be handling things like:
• stocking snacks + drinks
• organizing grocery deliveries
• keeping shared spaces clean + welcoming
• refilling coffee stations
• managing dishwashers + garbage
• making sure office essentials are always available

But honestly, the biggest thing they’re looking for isn’t cleaning experience — it’s personality.

Someone friendly, proactive, reliable, and calm under pressure. Someone who notices things before people even ask.

Schedule is Monday–Thursday, 7AM–3PM with some flexibility for extra hours when needed.

This honestly feels like one of those roles where the right person becomes everyone’s favorite person in the office.

Ever wonder what it’s actually like running a high-level corporate kitchen without the chaos of late-night restaurant service every single day?

This Executive Chef role honestly sounds like one of those rare positions where you’re not just “cooking” — you’re fully leading operations.

You’d be overseeing breakfast + lunch production for around 80–150 people daily, managing a team of about 6, handling catering/pop-ups occasionally, and basically owning the entire kitchen operation from food costing, inventory, hiring, scheduling, compliance, all the way to client interaction.

The interesting part is they’re looking for someone who’s strong operationally, not just creatively. Someone who understands:
• forecasting + waste reduction
• labour management
• HACCP / food safety compliance
• SOP-driven kitchens
• managing teams in fast-paced environments

And because it’s corporate-facing, communication matters a lot too. You’ll be working directly with management and clients, not just staying behind the line all day.

Comp is around $90k + benefits, RRSP, vacation, and they’re even open to relocation for the right person.

Honestly feels like a solid move for an experienced chef wanting more stability, leadership, and long-term growth outside the traditional restaurant grind.

Would you take a role like this or stay in restaurant/hotel kitchens?

We're Stellar Personnel, a hospitality staffing agency based in Canada, and we work with some genuinely great clients — restaurants, hotels, event venues, you name it. Right now we're placing a Sous Chef for one of our Vancouver clients and I wanted to share it here because this community tends to have the real talent.

What the role actually involves: you'd be working alongside the executive chef on menu development, leading kitchen operations, training the team, and making sure every plate that goes out is consistent and on point. They're specifically looking for someone with Asian cuisine experience — that's a hard requirement, not just a nice-to-have.

You'd need 3+ years as a Sous Chef, strong leadership, and the kind of attention to detail that makes kitchens actually run well.

If you're in Vancouver (or open to it) and this sounds like your lane, check us out at stellarpersonnel.ca or drop a comment/DM. Happy to give more details.

Hey Hamilton — I work for a staffing agency and we're currently matching people with a great client in the food service space. Sharing here because we genuinely need people fast and Reddit feels like the right place to find folks who are actually interested.

What the work looks like: dishwashing and kitchen prep. Nothing glamorous, but the pay is solid at $18/hr and the scheduling is actually flexible you pick how many days you work, anywhere from 1 to 7. Shifts come in 4, 8, 10, or 12 hour blocks, mornings and evenings.

You'll need 12 months of kitchen experience and valid Canadian work eligibility. That's pretty much it.

We hire fast some people start within days of applying. If you or someone you know is looking, drop a comment or DM me.
