Canadian Medicine
I wanted to ask about ways to finance medical school. I'm moving from the U.S. to Canada for my junior year of high school. My family originally moved from India to the U.S. because my dad had a high-paying IT job, but now we are trying to move to Canada. We will have significantly less money because my parents will try to take smaller jobs (cashier, daycare worker, etc.), and I am expected to work part-time as well if it doesn't disturb my studies. I am hoping that after a few years, my parents might get better jobs that reflect their education, but I don't know for sure if things will work out that way. We are moving to a pretty location, though, so that is nice. I worked very hard in the U.S. (rank 5 out of over 600 students), although I struggled to develop ECs and was a bit sad over the past year since we had some financial difficulties in the months leading up to my dad losing his job. I would ideally like to go into family medicine and have some measure of financial security and time to enjoy with my future children, but I don't want to get my hopes too high. Hopefully, I will get my permanent residency (PR) for Canada by the time I complete my bachelor's, but I am really worried about how I would finance my whole education, and how to set up a backup plan in case medicine doesn't work out.
Right now my plan is to do an RPN, then an RN, and then apply to medical school (since I would get my PR quickly through working in healthcare). I was hoping to work on premed courses a bit while doing my RPN and RN, and then finish up premed in 1-2 years after my RN before applying. I would like to become a doctor between my late twenties and mid-thirties and still have a life while doing it, I don't really know.
