Can some dogs be “naturals” at service dog work?
My husband and I got an Irish setter puppy for field work. I have cardio issues but we don’t have the money for a trained service dog and I’m not thaaaat bad - I can manage. After looking back, I noticed my girl will circle me as my heart rate starts to get high so I started paying attention/tracking and she does. Before I feel it, she is circling me and my tachycardia is on the rise. She never does it when I’m not tachy. I’ve never worked with her to do this, she’s never had training for it. She just “knows” to do this like she knows to drink water. I tried to get her to stop this circling, in fact, because it was annoying to not feel well and have her walking circles around me and tangle me in the leash. Right before everything started to go black and I almost passed out, she also flopped hard to the ground, got up and did it again while making eye contact. I heard her little body hit the ground, she didn’t gently lay down. She made sure we had eye contact and flopped. Then everything started fading out. I always thought dogs needed to be taught how to detect everything and it wasn’t something as natural as breathing.
