2009 S1000RR K46 – engine stalls when pulling clutch / severe throttle hesitation – need help diagnosing
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some help diagnosing a problem with my 2009 BMW S1000RR (K46).
The bike recently started behaving strangely and I’m not sure where to start looking.
What happened:
- Initially, the bike would start normally in neutral.
- As soon as I put it into 1st gear, the engine would immediately stall.
- At that point, the bike would not start with a gear engaged, only in neutral.
- After trying a few times, it eventually started and I was able to ride it.
However, while riding I noticed another problem:
- The throttle response was very inconsistent.
- When accelerating, it felt like the engine was repeatedly cutting in and out:
- power comes on
- power disappears
- power comes back
- power disappears again
- It felt almost like the bike was intermittently losing throttle/fuel/ignition rather than simply running poorly.
Then, when I pulled the clutch in, the engine stalled again.
So the combination of symptoms is what really confuses me.
I’m wondering if this could be related to:
- clutch switch / sidestand switch
- clutch adjustment or clutch not fully disengaging
- throttle position sensor / throttle system
- fuel pump / fuel pressure
- ignition coils
- wiring/electrical issue
- ECU detecting an implausible signal and cutting the throttle
- something else specific to the K46
The bike is a 2009 model, so it is one of the early K46 bikes.
Has anyone experienced this exact combination of symptoms or worked on a K46 with similar behavior?
I have already been to an official BMW shop, although they couldn't replicate the problem thus not help.
I’d really appreciate any suggestions on where to start diagnosing it and what I should check first. I’m happy to provide additional information or test specific things if someone can guide me through the diagnosis.
Thanks in advance!
