I had to pepper spray a loose dog and I feel terrible
My neighborhood is not great. There are a lot of bad pet owners who leave their dogs outside all day and they constantly bark and react to whatever stimuli passes by. They often get out of their fences and wonder around the streets. I have a dog and like taking him for long walks. One year ago he was attacked by three dogs who got out of their fenced in yard that was not closed all the way. It was so sad and I felt helpless. The owner could not get her dogs under control and lacked any sense of urgency.

Since then, I carry pepper spray and today I had to use it. I came around the corner and three dogs were out. I yelled at them to back up and two of them listened. The other dog continued approaching me and my dog. I did what I had to do and pepper sprayed him in the face. Afterwards, the owner of all three comes out of her second story tiny apartment and calls them all inside. There's no fence around the area. It's next to a busy street. If I wasn't yelling, she wouldn't have even come out to get them.

Because this type of dog owner is usually unpredictable and lacks accountability, I continued walking away. As I left, I regret not telling her that I had to spray her dog. But there's no way she didn't immediately find out on her own. I feel bad I sprayed him but I had to protect my dog and it would have turned into a 3 on 1 attack and potentially killed my dog or hurt me so I did what needed to be done. I still feel really bad about it though.
