How do I manage my dual income? Genuinely seeking help
I recently turned 25 and I’m looking for some advice on how I should manage my finances and build long-term wealth.
My current situation:
Full-time job at ABC: ₹1.2L/month
Freelance opportunity: ₹1,200/hour
Freelancing requires around 8 hours/day, 20 days/month
If everything goes as planned, freelancing could bring in roughly ₹1.9L/month
Total potential monthly income: ₹3L
However, I don't want to assume that the freelance income is permanent. It could end at any point, so I want to plan my finances around the possibility of losing that income.
My rough plan
I'm expecting my monthly expenses to be around ₹1L, including a significant amount that I send to my parents, along with rent, food, transportation, etc.
That leaves approximately ₹2L/month.
My initial thought was:
₹1L/month → Emergency fund until I have a comfortable safety net
₹25K/month → Gold
₹75K/month → ???
This is where I'm looking for advice.
I'm serious about building my financial portfolio now rather than increasing my lifestyle just because my income has increased. I'm particularly interested in what I should do with that remaining ₹75K every month.
Should I consider things like:
* Index funds / mutual funds
* Direct equity
* More allocation toward an emergency fund initially
* PPF / NPS
* FD/debt instruments
* Gold beyond ₹25K
* Saving toward a specific long-term goal
* Or something else entirely?
Also, how would you structure this considering that a large portion of my income comes from freelancing and could disappear suddenly?
For example, would it make more sense to build a much larger emergency fund first and only then start investing aggressively?
I'm not looking for a get-rich-quick strategy. I'd like to hear from people who have been in a similar position and can share what worked (or didn't work) for them.
Any practical advice on how you would allocate this ₹2L surplus each month would be appreciated.
