About the cats

Humanoid cats are very recurring characters in Ganbare Goemon games.

  1. in Ganbare Goemon Gaiden, Goemon and Ebisumaru reached Okaka, a cat village. All of the people who lived there were cats who can speak. The Mayor, whose name is Ponpoko drugged Goemon and Ebisumaru with a tea and jailed them. However, they escaped and helped another cat called Koban to scape. Koban had discovered that Mayor Ponpokon was a fraud and was jailed.

  2. in SNES/Famicom Ganbare Goemon 1, a ninja cat called Kurobei appeared after you defeat the ghost lady. It looks like the ghost lady and the cat are the same living being but, according with Spanish fan-translation of the game, Kurobei was trapped into ghost lady. In the same title, Koban appears again as the boss of a group of ninja cats.

  3. in Snes Ganbare Goemon 3, Kurobei and the ghost lady seems to be the same living being, and is transformed in the ghost form to avoid people to be near the Hagure-to-Iga teleport. Moreover, in the future there is another cat, called Nekokichi.

It looks like I know the majority of cat race details in the franchise, but I have 2 doubts:

  1. are ghost lady and Kurobei the same living being or was Kurobei trapped into the ghost? I have tried to read the original text in Japanese of the yukihime title, but is hard for me since even I am studying Japanese, my level is still low.

  2. Geograohically, where's Okaka?

Thank you!!

How many alternative stories there are?

After concluding that nobody knows why Onikage resurrects everytime in ToTA, it would be nice to analyze, how many alternative stories there are. I'll start (please tell me any mistake. If I have forgotten interesting information, please let me know):

Tenchu 2: only one story

Tenchu Dark secret: only one story

Tenchu 1: two alternative stories:

1.1->Rikimaru did everything

1.2-> Ayame did everything

Anyway, in both alternative stories, Rikimaru disappears at the end.

Tenchu Fatal Shadows: only one story (there are minor changes about things like if Ayame killed Ranzou or not, but there are minor changes)

Tenchu Wrath of heaven/Return from darkness: five alternative stories:

3.1-> Rikimaru defeated Tenrai and all his henchmen, and blended Izayoi with Mei-Oh's sword

3.2-> Rikimaru defeated Tenrai and all his henchmen, and didn't blend Izayoi with Mei-Oh's sword

3.3-> Ayame defeated Tenrai and all his henchmen, and fought Onikage

3.4-> Ayame defeated Tenrai and all his henchmen, and let Rikimaru fight Onikage

3.5-> Tesshu's story (he killed Ganda, so can't be compatible with Rikimaru's or Ayame's)

1.1 and 1.2 are compatible with any of Tenchu 3 stories. However, Tenchu 3 stories have substantial differences between them: in Rikimaru's story, he killed Mifuyu, but at the end of Tesshu's and Ayame's stories Mifuyu is alive. About Ayame's alternative stories, it looks like Sekiya Naotada died in 3.3 but no in 3.4

Tenchu Time of The Assasssins: only one story (Rikimaru, Ayame, Tesshu, Rin and Onikage's stories don't contradict between them). However:

Ayame's story: Ayame knows Mifuyu, so Ayame's story follows Return from darkness Ayame's story, being then incompatible with T3 Rikimaru's and Tesshu's stories.

Onikage's story: he became an ally with Yuge Jonosuke, who had been killed by Tesshu in Return from darkness. Story looks like after Tenrai's defeat, because he awakes in the cave and there is no mention of Tenrai (and Rikimaru is present, so It can't happens during Fatal Shadows story). There is no mention about Yuge being resurrected by Onikage, so ToTA's Onikage story is not compatible with Return from Darkness' Tesshu story. Sekiya Naotada is also alive, so this story is not compatible with 3.3.

Rikimaru, Rin and Tesshu's stories are compatible with any of the Tenchu 3's alternative stories

Tenchu Z: compatible with all of the mentioned alternative stories.

Tenchu: Shadow Assassins: compatible with all of the alternative stories except to 3.3 because Sekiya Naotada is alive.

In sum, there are an interesting combination of alternative stories. Isn't it?

Onikage's multiple resurrection

Why Onikage has resurrected so many times?

  1. In Tenchu 2, he was killed by Rikimaru and resurrected at the end of the game. Remember Onikage and Suzaku are the same person. I guess Mei-Oh resurrected him.

  2. In Tenchu 1, you have to kill him multiple times and he resurrected all of that times until the last stage, when he said "stop it, you won", and died. I guess Onikage was resurrected by Mei-Oh all of that times but resurrect him requires time, and that is the reason he wasn't resurrected in the last stage.

  3. In Tenchu 3, he was resurrected by Tenrai, but was brought to hell again when Tenrai and his henchmen are defeated

  4. In Time of the Assassins, he is alive in Rikimaru, Ayame and Rin's stories, and the three ninjas killed him in the last mission of their story modes (you need to put his life bar to 0, so he is really killed). But in the three ending cutscenes, we see that Onikage have just resurrected after his defeat, and decided to disappear. However, there is no mention to Mei-Oh or Tenrai.

My question is… why Onikage resurrected?

Favorite non-main character

In my opinion, main characters are Goemon, Ebisumaru, Sasuke and Yae. Non-main character are playable only in a few games (Kobaneko, Koryuta, Goroku…) or they are NPCs. There are a lot of secondary characters in Ganbare Goemon, could you tell us your favorites? For me is a very hard questions, some of them would be:

Any of Ebisumaru's evil versions: I specially like the evil double trope, and specially, Bismaru is really funny because his nun's clothes and he being the evil main character is specially weird, and I love absurd humor.

Suzaku: she was a really cool and charismatic character, I think she should be more used by Konami

Please tell us yours!!!

Why Tenchu Shadow Assasins is Tenchu 4?

The release order of Tenchu games are:

Tenchu Stealth Assassins (T1)

Tenchu 2 Birth of the Sthealth Assassins (T2)

Tenchu Wrath of Heaven (T3)

Tenchu Return from Darkness (T3 expanded)

Tenchu Fatal Shadows

Tenchu Time of the Assasins

Tenchu Dark Secret

Tenchu Z

Tenchu Shadow Assasins (T4)

I wonder… why is Shadow Assassins Tenchu 4 and not one of the previous games? Someone could thing "Rikimaru and Ayame being main playable characters is required to be a numbered Tenchu, but Rikimaru isn't in Fatal Shadows, and both are absent as playable characters in Z". Ok, but… why Time of the Assasins is not T4 then? Someone could thing "there are 5 main characters: Rikimaru, Ayame, Tesshu, Rin and Onikage. Is required to have at more 3 main characters, and at least 2 main characters. Two of them must be Rikimaru and Ayame". Okay… then, why Dark Secret is not Tenchu 4 then?

When I said things like "Rikimaru and Ayame being main playable characters is required to be a numbered Tenchu" I am not talking about official data but possible fan explanations, and I expose them to show there are not enought to solve my question. Do you know why Shadow Assassins is Tenchu 4 instead any of the previous titles?

Question about action films without bad tropes.

First of all, I enjoy watching movies like everyone else, but I don't have much of a film background, so excuse me if my question makes that pretty obvious. Let me explain my doubt:

In action cinema there are two tropes like I find really annoying: Deus Ex Machina and villains being stupid so the heroes can win. Examples:

  1. Yojimbo (Akira Kurosawa's classic samurai film): the protagonist is an unbeatable swordsman, but without his sword he can't fight. The bad guys go to his house when he's unarmed, beat him up, and kidnap him. They discuss tying him up while he's held captive and decide it's not worth the trouble because the beating they gave him has left him in rough shape. They leave the house figuring he won't be able to do anything after the thrashing he took. The protagonist escapes, recovers his sword, and kills all the villains.

  2. In Star Wars: A New Hope, the Empire's stormtroopers always miss their shots, but the good guys always hit.

  3. In Kill Bill, when the protagonist fights the Crazy 88, they attack one at a time, allowing her to kill them all by herself. It would have made more sense for them to attack all at once. Something similar happens, I think, in Bruce Lee films.

  4. You Only Live Twice (007): the villains miss their shots in an absurdly exaggerated way, they don't carry guns when they easily could, and in action scenes multiple enemies don't attack at the same time even when they have the chance. Bond is captured twice, but both times they decide to kill him later with overly elaborate schemes, even though he was defenseless and could have been killed with a single shot (Blofeld) or a stab (the red-haired villainess who has him tied up and threatens him with a scalpel). Blofeld has him captive in his base, surrounded by armed henchmen, yet keeps putting it off — and in the end, just as he's about to shoot him, Tanaka's ninjas arrive in a Deus ex Machina rescue.

5.In The Hunger Games, Katniss is completely helpless against another girl who pins her down and holds a knife to her throat. Instead of killing her, she goes on monologuing: "you're going to suffer and I'm going to enjoy it, hahaha" — until another character shows up and rescues her.

Honestly, I think these tropes are terrible… the enemies are conveniently stupid, and the heroes escape the worst situations thanks to enormous coincidences… and I notice these things happen in cult films, not in works considered bad or cheap.

So my question is: DO YOU KNOW OF ANY ACTION FILMS — HEROES VS. VILLAINS — WHERE NONE OF THIS HAPPENS? It really undermines the story. Thanks
