How well can American native speakers hear and comprehend British comedian James Acaster?

If you haven’t, try YouTubing or Netflixing him if you don’t mind

He’s like German to me (non-native) without subtitles, do you think this aspect ever affects the career of British entertainers like him in the American market?

Because I’ve read before that Ken Loach’s 1969 movie Kes (Northern England accent) was with subtitles on when it screened in the US

By the way Jimmy Carr is very listenable to me probably bc his routines are more mechanical, also Gervais, Oliver, Corden because they’re articulate enough

Did experiencing multiple decades as a continuous timeline make you look back on the entire history before you from a new angle?

I’m a 90s baby and up until my 20s, 70s/80s/90s and the entire 20th century as recorded in video felt like another dimension to me, because we started having computers and mobile phones in 2000s and that seemed like a crucial sign of modernity, but fast forward 2011 is 15 years ago, the same way 1995 was 15 years ago in 2010 !

I think it’s because people divide history based on their own life’s major events, like graduations, so I’m sure some Gen Z kids would think 2010s were ancient times ago the same way.

Did you feel this when you were young, for example about 1940s as a 50s baby, or about 60s as a 70s baby and so on?

Are all decades since your youth up until this year pretty a much one giant flow and did it change your perspectives on how you view the world and history in general?

Do you see in the face of your fellow old folk their current face or their youth years more?

Because I’ve never imagined young that I’d find people in their 30s, 40s and more attractive, and this is what I’m only noticing recently in my 30s, I get to see more the gradual, accumulative evolution of a person’s face, maybe because I see that in myself through the mirror everyday.

So when you’re attracted to a fellow old person, I’m imagining, do you think it’s because you resonate with them as inner young people that might be both still alive and kicking?

So turns out, the perspective of looking at an old person’s face is vastly different from a young person vs. fellow old person?

A (rather fringe) example is Norm Macdonald: most young people would look at his chubby appearance in his late years and only see a grandpa, but his young self is quite charming even in Gen Z standards, I’d say, and I’m able to see that was eerily alive in his old face now that I’m getting old

TLDR: Used to think a young face just “goes away” as you age, turns out it seems to rather pile up

Is lumping millennials and Gen Z as “MZ” not convenient to use?

If you could google about it, we in Korea have made it up and been using it for a while as a practical synonym for “distinctly notable young people” (for obviously various reasons)

Would the reason they’re not commonly lumped in the Anglosphere be because millennials and Gen Z in it feel more like they culturally share nothing with one another?

Wouldn’t at least something like “M&Z” be more convenient when you need to refer to the currently young demographic as a whole?

Is Louis C.K. a downgrade or extension of Carlin?

Just noticed today and found amusing:

Carlin, Back in Town (1996)

>F—k Mickey Mouse! F—k him in the a—hole with a big rubber dick! Then break it off and beat him with the rest of him! I hope Mickey dies. I do, I hope he godd—n dies. I hope he gets a hold of some tainted cheese, and dies lonely and forgotten behind the baseboard of a soiled bathroom in a poor neighborhood, with his hand in Goofy's pants. Mickey Mouse, no wonder no one takes our country seriously. We waste valuable television time informing our citizens of the age of an imaginary rodent!

Louis, Hilarious (2010)

>I don’t know This Lisa c—t, But she ain’t that funny. There’s just no way. She’s that funny on sight? F—k her. Seriously. I hope she’s dead. I really do. I hate her. I hope she died today. Weirdly and horribly. I hope the person She loved most Pushed her off a cliff, And she was just falling and Screaming the whole way down, Never accepting it. And then Superman swooped her up And then dropped her from higher. I seriously hope that happened… to stupid Lisa. With her one t-t bigger than the other, and her f—king frizzy hair, and her… Her big nose. F—king Jew. (Chuckles) What am I doing? I’ve lost my mind.

Louis is obviously openly influenced heavily by Carlin and is getting both physically and spiritually resembling him, if you saw his latest special - what do you think?

Do you, as a native speaker, ever prefer to have subtitles on when you watch English-language movies, comedy specials, podcasts, YouTube, etc. at home?

I (non-native) do for my native language because you don’t have to stay nervous about missing any word in the middle, and of course for English stuff, while I’ve managed to be able to hear most, I still like subtitles - and I’ve read Nolan movies for example are a pain in the ass even for native speakers in theaters

Good tip for learners and native speakers both: there are Chrome extensions you can use with which you can upload your own subtitle files for playback, quite useful
