So long and thanks for

Well, I finally did it. I deleted my wifi network from my kindles, put them all in airplane mode, then went online and removed all my send to kindle books from my account. I removed all the books downloaded from Amazon from each kindle, then side loaded all my unread books in my library to my Kindles in the format that best displayed on each kindle. No more book cover problems for me. I wasn't using whisper sync much, so I really had no use for any connection to Amazon with my Kindles. My library got large enough to prefer Calibre for management, so to paraphrase Douglas Adams: so long Amazon and thanks for all the ebooks.

Which output type for a 100% side loaded Kindle?

I am so tired with how AI slop has infected the internet. AI claims KFX is way better than MOBI, even better than AZW3. If it is just for reading text, since kindles suck at images no matter what, what could KFX have to offer? I swear I have never read anything on my kindle and thought “wow this must be a KFX file.

You never know what you will find inside

I picked up a 1961 Slim on eBay for $9, and finally got around to examining it. First. The cam spring was broken. So I decide to replace it. And yikes! No felt on the insert bottom, and look how much cotton got stuffed inside! The wick is definitely not OEM, looks like it had a wire lead to thread it it in from the chimney. And there is a home brew flint spring, Or one repurposed from a different manufacturer’s lighter. With the flint follower severely worn down, of course. I wonder if the wheel will still spark good. Got the new cam spring installed, first time I ever did that, seems like it will work. Now I have to put in a new wick, new cotton, and new flint spring and see how it does.

Jailbreaking Kindle and future DRM strength?

I was able to jailbreak my Kindle Voyage, which is my last Kindle that downloads Amazon ebooks without the strengthened DRM. If Amazon has slipped in changes to older Kindles that allow strengthened DRM without a firmware update, does jailbreaking prevent that from happening on a Kindle Voyage? So far I haven't really liked KOReader, so preserving my Voyage's ability to download Kindle books that Calibre can remove the DRM is the only benefit I can think of that would make jailbreaking worth while.

Kindle DRM free downloads

Kindle DRM free downloads usually come as EPUB files when the publisher requests Amazon to provide them. All my previous purchases of DRM free kindle books send me an ePub file when I clicked on the download option. However, today I bought an ebook that allows DRM free download, and when I click the option I don't get an epub file, all I get is a webpage that opens and allows me to read the book on the window I have open at the time. WTF? Amazon glitch? Or is this the new way for Amazon to provide you with a DRM free reading option without actually giving you a drm free file?

It finally happened - PW10 updated kfx.zip

Last week my Kindle Paperwhite 10 updated. I had been using it to move ebook.kfx files into Calibre. I just bought an ebook this morning, and the very old book downloaded as a kfx.zip file. My PW10 updated to software version 5.18.1.1.1 (4769680023) Well, that's the last Kindle Ebook if the publisher does not allow DRM free downloading. Unless..... maybe my Kindle Voyage still doesn't get kfx.zip?

3 ways to patina

My three patinas (so far). Three different methods. Three different results. Which do you think is best?

Far right was first, vinegar and salt fumes chamber heated to 190 degrees for 90 minutes, then let rest for 90 minutes. ---- edit: the internet and AI say this is a stupid thing to do since the vapor pressure can cause a vessel rupture. I figured the canning jar lid would vent before that happened, but I won't be doing that again. You shouldn't do it either.--- end edit. Rustoleum enamel clear coat.

Far left was burried shallowly in a flowerpot out side for 2 months. Rustoleum enamel clear coat.

The middle one was yesterday, ammonia and salt fumes chamber for 6 hours. Came out brilliant blue all over. Alas, rustoleum enamel clear coat spray solvents dissolves the fragile powdery blue patina, so it darkened, turned black in some spots, and greatly subdued the blues. I thought about stripping it for a do over, but I still like it. If it stabilizes I think I will keep it.

Of the three, the flower pot method on the left is the most stable and durable even before the clear coat. The blues and greens colors are just more delicate and prone to flaking off and wearing, making careful application of a coating mandatory. I have ordered everbright protectaclear acrylic clear coat for my next ammonia fume experiment to try and preserve the brilliant blue patina. Wish I had taken a picture of it.

Are they the same?

When I purchase an Ebook from Amazon that the publisher has requested no DRM, I have two options for getting the ebook into Calibre. I can download the Epub file directly from Amazon, put it into Calibre, then have Calibre convert it to mobi. Or I can just connect my Kindle Paperwhite 10 to my desktop, move the .kfx file over to calibre, and use calibre to make the epub and mobi versions. My question is, do both methods create the same epub and mobi ebook? Or is one method better than the other?

Backfire

Since this lighter was a decal on top of street chrome, I got the idea to put some clear coat on top to slow down the wear on the decal. I used rustoleum Matt clear coat, and one spot bubbled up. Attempting to get it to stick back down made it worse. Sigh.

R/Zippo using Safari instead of the app

Viewing threads and pictures on R/Zippo on an iPhone is easy. Open a thread to look at the Zippo pictures, maybe post, then back out and I am right where I jumped in. But if I use Safari, on a desktop or iPad( I had lots of app login issues on my iPad for a while) I get put back to the top of the list when I back out of a thread. And then there is usually a scroll lag trying to get back to where I was. Posted in r/Zippo because this is mainly where I experience this. Is there a trick for r/zippo on a desktop to solve this?

Zorro wick in Slim Zippo?

I bought 4 Slim Zippos, between 30 and 50 years old, in a single auction on Ebay. They had the most bizarre insert contents: weird wicks, goofy colored cotton, cotton that came out in one piece, not to mention cotton crusted with decomposed wick dust, and flint tubes totally jammed from corroded flints. I replaced the cotton in all of them, cleared the flint tubes, and put in new flints. I decided to replace all the wicks, and I had a few dozen Zorro wicks that were given to me as samples. I didn't really plan on using the Slims much, so I figured I would put the Zorro wicks in them. They were a tight fit and hard to pull through. A few days ago I decided to carry one, to see if I liked them enough to buy some engraved and decorated Slims. The slim worked terrible, small (half inch) and sputtering flame . I played with the fuel amount, packing, and the wick, but no help. I was going to give up, then decided to replace the Zorro wick with an OEM zippo wick. The OEM zippo wick was narrower, slid right in, and once I got past vapor lock from over filling (is there any other type of filling? LOL), it works great - 1.5 inch and constant flame!

Anyone else have the thicker Zorro wicks cause trouble in a Slim?

Case to hold Slim Zippos?

Anyone know of storage or display cases specifically sized to fit Slims? The used slim zippos I consider buying never seem to have a box, so I could use something to put them in, something that would also fit in a drawer

Repair base for Slim Zippo?

Does anyone make a base to hold a slim Zippo insert for repair tasks, like removing the flint wheel and removing/replacing the cam? I have one for a standard size Zippo, and it sure is convenient. Unfortunately, it does not fit a slim insert well enough to be of any use.

Oh, like this never happened to you.........

https://preview.redd.it/u392zlmx571h1.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5c163f386b146a69f35604a5cea8b9d788b468ed

I was tinkering with a few used and abused old Slim Zippos, they were all very tight while I was trying to replace the wick. I thought this wick was far enough through to pull, but I guess I only had a grip on the inner fibers and the outside was stuck. Whoops.

I think this was from a generic lighter repair kit, or possibly a zorro wick I was sent as a sample when I bought something else from Alliexpress.
