Mod Update: Proposed Rule Change on Berner Mix Posts

Edit: We’ve heard you. For the timing being bernadoodle posts will be regulated to only the Monday adoption posts. As you all have pointed out there are more appropriate subs for this content.

We recently asked the community for feedback on Berner mix posts. Out of 735 total votes, a clear majority supported continuing to allow mixes in some form, with 263 votes for allowing mixes with some restrictions and 155 for allowing all mixes. An additional 52 selected no opinion, while 258 voted for allowing only purebred Bernese Mountain Dogs.

Based on that feedback, we are proposing an update to clarify our approach going forward.

The purpose of this subreddit is to celebrate Bernese Mountain Dogs and to share information, experiences, photos, questions, and knowledge about the breed. With that in mind, posts do not need to feature only purebred Berners, but they should be primarily about Bernese Mountain Dogs or meaningfully related to the breed.

Proposed rule update:

Posts should be primarily about the Bernese Mountain dog breed.
Posts including mixes, other breeds, or multi-dog households are allowed, as long as the primary focus is meaningfully connection to Bernese Mountain dog breed. Bernadoodle posts will be removed but will be allowed in the Monday rescue posts.

Posts that are primarily about other breeds, mixed-breed dogs without a meaningful Berner connection, or general dog content unrelated to Bernese Mountain Dogs may be removed.

Posts seeking information about intentionally breeding Bernese Mountain Dog mixes, or looking for breeders of BMD crosses, will be removed and redirected to more appropriate subreddits.

Posts asking the community to guess whether a dog has Bernese Mountain Dog in them will be removed, since visual breed identification is not reliable.

To make space for rescued and adopted Berner mixes, we are also considering a weekly “Mixed Up Monday” thread for mix photos, questions, and discussion.

Our goal is to keep this subreddit centered on Bernese Mountain Dogs while still being welcoming to community members whose dogs may not be purebred, but who are here because they love and want to learn about the breed.

What should our official policy be regarding Bernese Mountain Dog mixes?

Following the recent discussion about mixed-breed posts in this subreddit, we’d like to hear from the broader community before making any rule changes. We’ll leave this poll up for the next week to get more traction.

Thanks for voting and please keep the discussion civil

[oc] Ugh. Guy tried to claim it was my fault and refused to let me take a photo of his insurance so the cops had to be called.
