Avoiding gyno on fin when you are prone
Hello everyone,
I am a 28 yo male with mild diffuse thinning but significant thinning on the crown. I have pre-existing gyno from puberty and was always worried about making it worth with finasteride but the thinning started getting worse so I took the plunge 8 months ago and used 1mg oral finasteride + 5% topical minoxidil daily. One month in and I started feeling breast/nipple tenderness and pain for a week and I stopped.
The pain persisted for the next 7 months despite stopping fin (though it was on and off). Gyno looks like it's gotten slightly worse although it's hard to be 100% sure since I already had a pre-existing case (confidence level is 80%+). I tried finasteride again 2 weeks ago but stopped after a week again due to immediate nipple/breast pain and sensitivity. GP gave me a referral to get a mammogram to actually track the size but unfortunately I have not done one before so I have no baseline, I suppose I could just get the mammogram, try oral finasterida again, and get another to see if there is any actual growth.
I am hoping to try out 0.025% topical finasteride as there is this study showing it has less serum DHT suppression than 1mg oral but similar scalp DHT suppression: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34634163/. Has anyone else tried this? And has anyone who is prone to gynecomastia like myself had any success with finding a hairloss prevention protocol that does not make the gyno worse? RU58841 seemed promising but it's really hard to get it consistently where I live (Sydney, Australia)
FYI: My total T is 600ng/dl and estradiol is 22 pg/ml (measured 1 month ago). Unfortunately never got my free T/E2/SHBG tested as GP did not want to.
