Knee and ankle instability. Untreated previous injurious. Possibly knee sublexion.

36 male. 6 feet tall 180 pounds. Avid runner around 50 miles per week.

I’ve always thought I had poor balance and was just bad at skiing, always the person to slip on muddy hills when hiking with friends.

I was recently paddleboarding and I could barely stay on my feet. My ankles were shaking uncontrollably and after just a few minutes became too sore to stand.

I’ve had several knee injuries which I’ve never really had diagnosed. Basically I’ll pivot in one direction and my leg bones move that way but my knee doesn’t. Then my knee sort of snaps back into place. It’s happened a couple times now to both knees. I don’t really play those sorts of sports any more so I wasn’t worried about it. although it did happen playing Spikeball more recently. It even happened once in college from opening a cupboard door which hit my kneecap just right and shifted it out of place.

I’m starting to realize now that poor balance could seriously prohibit me from hiking, running and the other outdoor things I love.

I’m curious how I can start strengthening my ligaments and improving my balance.

Are European and U.S. restaurants evaluated on different things?

I am by no means a food expert and certainly don’t have the most refined pallet so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

I’ve been to 4 one star Michelin restaurants, two in the U.S. and 2 in Europe.

Both of the U.S. places ( Chicago - Boka, LA - Meteora ) had phenomenal food. Absolute flavor bomb sauces for nearly every dish. The two in Europe ( Rome, Valencia - Riff ) were good but had far less flavor. My thought was that maybe they are trying to let the main ingredient shine.

Still, out of the five friends that were with me at both Meteora and Riff, no one thought Riff was better. In fact no one was sure if the best dish at Riff was better than the worst at Meteora.

So I’m wondering if perhaps the European standards are lower? Not really sure why that would be. Or maybe if the U.S. is more flavor focused rather than technique.

Not trying to disparage the European chefs at all. Those meals were still great.

Lifestyle comparison between different levels of annual expenditure?

Hi all I’m curious if someone can breakdown the lifestyle differences between someone spending 50k, 100k, 200k, and 200k+ after taxes.

Really we can use whatever brackets are most logical but I’m wondering what types of things are typical of a person in each bracket. After 100k is it just fancier cars and clothing or are their actual practical things people are buying?

What is it like living at these different expenditure levels?

Hi all,

I am working on creating a budget and retirement plan. We live in the U.S. and plan to retire in our early 50s. Right now we spend about 50k a year to live plus 25k for our mortgage.

Life is good and we don’t really need to spend more but it would be nice not to live quite so frugally. We both are high earners and we’re looking to retire on 5-10 million. At a 4% withdrawal rate we would have an annual budget of 200-400k.

At the time we retire, after inflation, we would have the purchasing power of 100-200k

I’m curious if anyone can breakdown the lifestyle changes between someone spending 50, 100, and 200k.

We don’t want to retire too soon and realize it’s not enough, but we also don’t want to work an extra 10 years for money we don’t need.

Lastly, we don’t have any expensive hobbies other than traveling. In retirement I could see us traveling up to 3 months a year.

Why is Cape Verde its own country and not part of Portugal?

After reading the Wikipedia page for Cape Verde it sounds like the island group was uninhabited before it the Portuguese discovered it?

There were no native inhabitants to give the land back to, so why exactly did they become their own country?

Is it just because the proximity is so far from Portugal that over time it loses Portuguese influence and sort of becomes its own culture?

Roth conversion vs rolling into solo 401k

Hi all,

After I left my last job I moved my 401k to Fidelity and it became a rollover IRA.

My income is now higher and I want to start doing a backdoor IRA but I can’t do this while I have the rollover IRA.

It seems like my two options are either to do a Roth conversion which merges the rollover IRA into my Roth IRA. Or I can open up a solo 401k and roll the rollover IRA into that.

Does it matter which option I choose?

Asset Class Allocation

Hi all, my wife and I are in our mid thirties both with good paying jobs.

She just finished up medical residency and I am doing some restructuring of our investments. We have a pretty solid plan in terms of what types of accounts we should be using to maximize tax advantage and whatnot.

What I am unsure of is how we should be allocating our investments between different asset classes.

When I first started investing about 10 years ago we were doing something like 75% U.S. stock, 20% international stock, and 5% bonds.

I’m wondering if I should be adding additional asset classes to our portfolio, real estate in the form of REITs for example. Also wondering if there is a desired % for each asset classes.

Why do we tend to treat consciousness as an all or nothing?

It seems to me that most of the discussion around consciousness circles around what things are and are not conscious. When looking at computers and AI we try to determine if it is conscious and what type of tests we could perform to prove it.

Why isn’t consciousness measured on a scale like our other senses. Some organisms have better hearing than humans, some of worse, some hear higher frequencies than we do and some hear lower.

It seems to me that consciousness would be the same. Some organisms have a primitive level of consciousness and some more advanced.

Do I need to circulate the ingredients for brew in a bag?

I’m trying my first brew in a bag today and I realized the bag is very full. There is no room for the grains to move around inside the bag. I’m wondering if that’s going to be a problem.

Are the grains in the center going to release their sugars or do I need to get the ingredients mixing around a bit first

Do flaked oats and flaked barley look similar?

I am trying to do a brew in a bag for the first time. I ordered flaked barley for my recipe but what I got looks a lot like oats. Do flaked barley and flaked oats look similar or did I just get the wrong thing?

Forgot to dissolve priming sugar before kegging

Hi all.

I am attempting my first kegged beer. I am not going to force carbonate. Instead I added priming sugar straight to the keg. I completely forgot to dissolve the sugar in water before hand.

Is there anything I can do now or should I just wait and see what happens

Help understanding Alex O Connor’s position against free will

Hi all,

After watching a debate with Ben Shapiro, I’m trying to understand Alex O Connor’s position against free will.

My understanding is that he believes actions must either be random or determined. A random action is random and therefore wouldn’t come about by free will. A determined action must be determined by something. If that something is external to ourself than again this can’t be free will. If that something is internal to ourself than we can ask again, what determined that something. Eventually we find that the root of an action must either be random or external.

I am probably misunderstanding his position so maybe someone can clarify, but I’m confused why I can’t just say “my brain determined the action or choice I made”. Why does there need to be a deeper layer of something determining what made my brain make the decision?

Leaky gas line on weed whacker

I suppose this isn’t truly home maintenance but I figure the folks here would have an idea how to fix this.

The black tubing that transports gas has split just above the metal ring. I’m thinking some type of sealant would fix the issue.

I don’t even own gorilla glue so I’m going to have to buy something to fix this.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hi all

I just noticed a pretty large tree growing out of a window well in my back yard. It was too big to pull out by the roots so I sawed it off as far down as I could get. I’m worried the roots are going to keep growing into the foundation.

Any advice how I can take care of this
