Ceddanne Rafaela Nugs

What do

Jose Ramirez
Luis Arraez
Freddie Freeman
Ozzie Albies
Julio Rodriguez

Have in common?

Coming into tonight, they were looking up at Ceddanne Rafaela on the OPS leaderboard.

He’s so far produced 33% more bWAR than Soto (1.8 vs 1.2).

Speaking of Soto…for AAV purposes, he will be paid more than the entirety of Ceddanne’s 8 year extension every year for the next 13 years.

For context, that’s as far into the future as the 2013 bearded brother, marathon bombing Red Sox World Series is in the past.

In 1326 career at bats, he’s produced 9.3 WAR.

In this year and the four years prior, Trevor Story posted 8 WAR for the Red Sox, while being paid basically twice the value of Rafaela’s 8 year extension. He also is still owed AFTER this season….the equivalent of Rafaela’s 8 year extension over the next two years.

At a rate of $10M / WAR, he almost produced the entire value of the extension last year alone, and he’s on pace to have a higher WAR this year.

All this includes a dropped fly ball in the sun a week into the year, that tanked his defensive value for a month.

Might have one of the highest trade values in the sport by the end of this year.

Strange but true…

As of may 18th, a 2026 lineup of Kwan in LF, Merrill in CF, and Tatis Jr in RF, in a combined 143 games, has produced 0.1 more bWAR than Caleb Durbin has put up, while posting a lower OPS+ (42) than games played (43).

Bregman poll Results

Interesting split with 43 votes from the community. Just over 50% (23) would press a button and put Bregman on the team right now, while 20/43 seem to think that the red flags outweigh any benefit his intangibles would provide.

Albeit, small sample but feel like that’s a substantial shift in sentiment from the first couple weeks of the season.

Thanks to all who voted, always interested in where the temperature of the community is at.

Blue Moon Genie poll

The Blue Moon genie comes out as you pop open your fifth beer in the 4th watching Story strike out. He offers you a loophole in space/time. Alex Bregman can be on the team under the current terms of his contract and for the length of it - 5 years/$175M, with a no trade clause. Durbin gets optioned to Worcester.

Given his production (or lack thereof) this year, do you take him up on it?

The Section 10 genies pops out of your 7th blue moon, in the 5th inning after Ranger doesn’t come out. He’s got an offer for you. Whatever you pick, you will immediately forget this interaction ever happened. You have to live thru it.

Door #1: Breslow stays on through 2028. This year and next are awful. Bobby valentine level drama, two last place finishes. But then things click. The Sox spend the next decade making the playoffs 8/10 years between 2028 and 2038. They win 2 championships.

You’re given no info in terms of how the team is run, how many coaches, what the roster is like, style of play, if they get trounced in the first round every year…..All you’re told is Breslow is there the whole time.

Door #2: Sox finish in last place, Breslow gets fired. You roll the dice on what the next decade looks like.

Please only vote if you consider yourself someone who wishes Breslow was fired instead of Cora, or that both were fired.

If the following five events occur, would you concede he made smart roster moves?

  1. Caleb Durbin finishes with a higher WAR than both Bregman or Devers

  2. Ranger Suarez finishes in the top 5 in Cy Young voting

  3. Chad Tracy finishes top 3 in Manager of the Year voting

  4. Contreras hits 30+ HR’s

  5. The Sox make the playoffs

Listening to Roman and Marcelo’s comments around the last few days and it is interesting that neither expressed any real disappointment. Shock, surprise, but nothing like, “Cora was like a father.” Or “He brought the best out of me.”

Cora was 40 when he was hired originally, same age as Tracy is now. Having a 15 year gap between your core players and manager might be a big difference these days, as opposed to a 25 year gap. Just a thought.
