Beginner looking to build experience in hiking & scrambling

Hi everyone,

I’m 35M based in Calgary and I’m looking to get into scrambling and build confidence exploring trails and mountains of varying difficulty.

Last year I completed Table Mountain and really enjoyed it, so I’d like to work through other well-known routes around the area such as Mount Shark, the Hoffman Trail, Turtle Mountain, and Smutwood Peak.

I’ve recently invested in proper hiking gear, including a Garmin inReach, and I’m ready to start building this into a more serious hobby and lifestyle.

I’d appreciate any recommendations on good places, routes, or resources for learning the basics of scrambling safely.

Thanks

Cannon Beach Trip

Hi guys,

I am planning a road trip to Cannon Beach from Calgary. Hoping to do this over 9 days. Can you please double check my itinerary and see if it’s okay? I don’t plan on stopping at hotels or lodges but rather sleep in my truck or at a state parking lot overnight with a tent. Is there anything I need to be aware of ? Also what are good places to hike along the way?

Home > Kelowna > Seattle > port Angles > Forks > Rialto beach > HOH rainforest > ruby beach > haystack rock > cannon beach > Portland > wahkenna falls > home

Id like to stick to under $4500 CAD for the trip, I know most will be spent on fuel.

Thoughts?

A structure fire on a third‑floor patio was quickly brought under control this evening in Downtown Calgary, thanks to aggressive firefighting efforts by the Calgary Fire Department. Fire Crews contained the incident before it could extend further into the condo building. No injuries were reported at the time.

Busy day in Cochrane today. Fire Crews were already stretched dealing with several grass fires around the area when a structure fire broke out in the Heartland neighbourhood. With Rocky View County Fire Services tied up on those grass fire calls, mutual aid was brought in from Calgary Fire Department and Redwood Meadows Fire Department to support the response.

Six units in a multi‑family building were affected, and several residents were displaced, but thankfully no injuries were reported. Cochrane FCSS and Victim Services were on scene helping the people impacted while fire crews worked through suppression, overhaul, and investigation.

A lot of moving parts on this one, and solid teamwork across all agencies involved.
