Suggest things to do in Jasper National Park

My friends are visiting me from Europe. I will be taking them to Jasper and Banff. I want to know what I can do in Jasper National Park. I personally have been to Jasper 7-8 times. I have done a lot of things there, like Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls, Edith Cavell, Mount Wilcox, Athabasca Glacier, Pyramid Lake, Patricia Lake, Jasper downtown and Miette Hot Springs.

We have 3 days in Jasper and are planning to stay in one of the campgrounds. Suggest something else to me.

Best Mosquitoes protection

Hi, I always get the most mosquito bites out of all my friends whilehiking . Has anyone had the same issue and found a good solution? I've tried bug spray, but it didn't really do anything.

Alberta Visit

Hi Everyone

I wanted to ask about the following hikes and which one is the best ones to do for someone who is visiting for the first time and had a few questions about hikes like cirque peak.

Banff

- Burstall Pass

-Cirque Peak (is the scramble sus?)
- Plain of Glaciers + Lake Louise / Sentinell Pass?

- In Jasper I only have 3 days and these are the current hikes I am looking at

  • Bow peak
  • Bald Hills
  • Verdant Pass
  • Mount Bourgeau (Doing)
  • Wilcox Pass(Doing)

Yoho

- Emerald Basin - Is emerald triangle worth the mileage?

Waterton

I am open to suggestions for Jasper what I should do as well as a overall as a first timer and whether the hikes I am doing will give me a good overview of the Canadian Rockies

First time in waterton

Hi Everyone, I am doing a trip from glacier NP all the way to banff, jasper, and wanted to stop in waterton. I am planning to do akamina ridge but wanted to ask whether there are any other hikes which may be more impressive than this one in the park like carthew, lineham etc. I also wanted to ask how narrow akamina is as from photos it does look pretty narrow.

Mount Assiniboine via Sunshine Village

Just wondering if anyone has done this hike recently (or know someone who has) and can share any trail updates?

I booked a camp trip several months ago not thinking the snowpack would be as deep and long lasting as it has been and I’m tossing up whether to commit to the trip in the coming week, or cancel and postpone until a later date (which I’d rather avoid as future bookings aren’t guaranteed). I can’t seem to find any recent trail reports mainly from sunshine through to og lake so I’m just seeing if anyone has an update? Tia

Tonquin Valley Trail

Hey, so I have tonquin valley booked for July 29th-August 1. Starting at Portal campground to Amethyst, then to Switchback.

I just found out the Astoria trailhead is closed so if my last night is at Switchback then I would have to hike all the way back through the trails I’ve already done which is really long. Does anybody have any other recommendations on a way out?

I was looking at instead just spending the first night at portal then Amethyst and skipping Switchback. Would 1 day at Amethyst be enough or would it be work staying the extra night at Switchback?

I live in Banff so I would be driving up from Banff and then back down after the hike.

Thank you!!

Hikers ignoring trail closures

I was camped at Little Elbow this week, near the Nihahi Ridge trailhead. Park rangers had the main trailhead taped off due to the river and water conditions. I talked to the ranger that was putting up the sign and map with alternative route (Nihahi ridge trail was still accessible via the alternate route), and she said there were risks with the river, and that they had been so busy with emergencies that they wouldn't be able to to monitor this section of trail and were asking people to take the alternate route that stayed away from the river (the alternate route was roughly 300m longer when going from the trailhead parking lot, so really not that much extra).

Granted, the trail looked ok, but the large majority of day hikers just ignored the sign and went under the tape, without knowing the actual condition of the trail ahead. Is it unreasonable to expect people to respect signs/trail closures when there is an alternate route available? Do people do the same thing if an area is clearly closed due to bears?

As someone who took the effort to go the alternate route, it was really disappointing to see how people reacted to the closure.

Devils Thumbs via Big Beehive

Logged around 14 km in round trip around Lake Louise. Weather was a mix of rain and sunshine (sadly no rainbows)

ETA on road closures

We were planning to hike either Ha Ling or King's Creek next week, but as most of you probably know, the access roads are currently closed. Does anyone know if there's an ETA for when they'll reopen, or is it still pretty up in the air? Any updates would be appreciated!

Open Hikes tomorrow?

Hi everyone, we arrived in Canmore today and realized that we can't really do our planned hikes...

We wanted to do the Ha Ling Peak, the sarrail ridge and the grassi lakes today and tomorrow. However, today we ran into obvious problems...

Can you recommend something for tomorrow? So we can still use the day and get some good views?

Park ranger photographed us, why?

So, earlier this week, our vehicle was maybe photographed by a park ranger, which felt a bit odd. This happened early in the morning, right after we arrived at the trailhead to hike one of the trails.

Unfortunately, we didn't get back in time before the park ranger left to ask the ranger if something was wrong.

We’re wondering now if we might get a fine—in case we did something wrong. We’ve tried to find out whether fines are issued digitally or physically, but without success. That’s why I’m turning to you reddits for some guidance.

Thanks!

Medium hikes around Edmonton where roads aren’t closed

Exactly what it says above. What are some good hikes 2-4 hours away from Edmonton that can be done as a day trip. Initially we wanted to go to mist mountain but the roads are closed due to flooding. Are there any hikes that are accessible for the weekend?

Alternative hikes

Hey all my gf and I are headed out to Banff/canmore area from July 12-24 for the first time and we’re planning to do lots of hikes while there. With the unfortunate state of k country and the possibility of it not being open I just want to have a few alternatives to the hikes I have planned as most of them are in k country. Hopefully you all can give me some good recommendations of similar difficulties and/or views (we enjoy large scaling views of that makes sense). Obviously we hope that everything will be open, just nice to have a back up plan:)

The hikes we currently have planned that may be inaccessible:
Serrail ridge
Smutwood peak
Ha ling peak
Tent ridge

Edit: please let me know if you also think that most of the roads will be open by then, I don’t know much about the yearly cycle and if it’s semi normal for there to be road closures in spring

Kananaskis hiking options/conditions for July 1 - 7, 2026

As the weather in May/June 2026 absolutely sucked for hiking, many of us are dying to get out and enjoy some good trails.

I'm starting this thread to discuss what trails are open and what condition they are in following the heavy rains of late June.

If you been hiking in K Country, please tell us where you hiked, what the trail was like and any other information you think would be pertinent, ie traffic levels, road closures, etc.

Thanks

Wind Ridge Trail Difficulty Level and Accessibility

Hi,

So my sister and I are looking into hiking a nice trail in the canmore area (can venture out) and we came across Wind Ridge Trail. Its marked as hard, but im seeing reviews that is it doable. We want to do it but a) dont know if we are able body enough to complete it, and b) there has been a lot of rain and closures in the area and I cant seem to find if its even accessible for July 2nd.

For reference, I have hiked Lake Agmes Teahouse trail 3 years ago, and Tunnel Bluffs via Lions Bay last year, both of which I found doable but took longer than the average person. My sister has only done Lake Agnes Teahouse and found it a bit more challenging, took her a lot more time to complete.

If there are any other recommendations with a good summit viewpoint that wouldnt be closed right now we are more than happy to hear about it!

Edit - I also wanted to add that I have heard there is a point on the trail before the peak that has an amazing view, and some people end up finishing at that point and then head back. Was wondering if that is also a good option for us?
