Looking for guidelines on dog running distances.

Hi! I am training for my first half marathon and wanting some feedback on how far is too far for dogs to run.

Context - my dog (pictured after the groomer today 😊) is a 2 year old Finnish Lapphund. She has been running with me for the last year or so, but no more than 3 miles. Now that I’m getting into longer distances I don’t want to overdo it for her, so wanting to plan my routes so I can drop her at home when she’s had enough.

She has a very heavy double coat (arctic breed), so I am very careful of the 150 rule and also carrying water and a dish for her.

We did 4.5 miles two nights ago and that seemed like a lot for her. She was okay the next day but we stopped for a water break and she was lagging towards the end.

I’m doing a 5 mile long run tomorrow morning and was going to take her, but I think I’ll do 3 miles with her and then drop her at home and finish the last two by myself. She loves running with me though and will be bummed to be dropped off (I think).

Does anyone in here run with double coated/similar size breeds? If so how far do you go with them before it’s too much? Thanks!

Just Signed Up for my first half marathon!

I just signed up for my first half marathon Labor Day weekend and I feel kind of nervous now! I've been training for the last 3 weeks and obviously plan to continue but now it's real. We are traveling to the race (about 6 hours away) - lodging is booked and I'm registered so I guess now I just have to get to work! We are getting a big heat wave where I live next week, so I'm definitely dreading that.

Tailbone Pain

Hi! I’m new to riding and have been training for my first 19 mile gravel race. Something I keep bumping up against is significant/severe tailbone pain after riding and towards the end. Not the SITS bones, not anything towards the front of my pelvis, it’s literally awful pain directly on/in my sacrum and coccyx. Like when I go to sit down or stand it hurts incredibly.

It lasts for days and NSAIDs and ice sort of help but not entirely.

I also am noticing my left hip bursitis is flaring up wildly the longer/faster I ride. I’ve dealt with it off and on a few years and it was fine until I started riding.

Some background - I’m a consistent weight lifter at home, I follow a program designed for women and vetted by a PT. I’m a runner at heart, and I have been intermittently running 5ks through my cycling training.

I rode last on Friday (today is Wednesday) and I have been lightly wrecked since then. I can still do all my daily activities but it’s just low grade pain and then the burning in my hip. I’m a mom of two kids and active in daily life so I don’t really have a choice but to be up and moving most days.

I have heard this can be a sign of needing to adjust the seat height or angle? Or maybe it’s just me.

Overstimulated Parents - let’s talk

Anyone have ideas/suggestions for getting through that 4-7 pm time period when you are fried from your regular adult life and responsibilities and your young kids are also fried from being at school all day and you’re trying not to reach for a drink to just quiet your mind down because you can’t physically escape your very loud/demanding surroundings and your brain is simultaneously on fire?

ETA: you also can’t do any of your usual calming hobbies because you’ll get interrupted if you start and it’s just not worth it.

Egg Eating 😑😑

Hi! I recently added two new chickens to my established flock and the new ones are eating all of the eggs 😠I was hoping they would stop once they settled in but it’s been a little over 3 weeks and they haven’t.

I have oyster shells out in multiple places. One of them sits on the roosting bar and watches the others lay eggs and then hops down to eat the egg as soon as the other hen jumps out of the nesting box 😑

I’ve never had my older ones intentionally eat the eggs. I’ve had one break on accident and they will eat it. I have 7 chickens and I’m getting 1-2 eggs per day if I can run out there and grab the egg before the new ones get to it.

I’ve tried locking the new ones out of the coop before the older ones start laying, but they still eat their own eggs in the run. And I feel bad that my older ones are locked inside all morning.

I’m starting to get pretty frustrated with this. I got the chickens from someone on FB so I don’t think there’s a return policy but any suggestions on how to make them stop??
