Odd
So I’m in my third year of having chickens and this is the second time I’ve had this happen this year only. Anyone else have this happen? Post-it for size comparison.
Pullet or cockerel???
My Buff Orphington has started attempting to crow in the morning but it sounds more like, “HAHAHAHAHA.” My spouse thinks she might be a rooster, I am in denial. Can you please confirm your opinion? Thank you for your help.
Somewhere out in 'The Middle'
.....lives the Heck family.
But
I’m as confused about their breed as Sue Heck was during literally any major life decision 😭
Struggling with this one - hen or roo?
Im looking specifically at the mainly white chick with the mixed pattern. Baxter is half bantam gamefowl and half amareucana and I am having trouble getting a read on their sex! What do you think, reddit? Hen or roo?
Let me know if you see any other potential roos in the photo that I may have missed!
Broody hen keeps eating eggs halfway through incubation.
She’s been broody for months. Every time I think she’s going to hatch some eggs and get it out of her system, she fucking eats them! After her horrific meal, it’s not long before she lays more eggs and starts incubating from scratch.
Of course she has access to food and water, so it’s not like she’s doing this out of necessity.
EDIT: To clarify, as folks have asked, it’s literally right under her face. I worried she wouldn’t eat/drink if it wasn’t right there.
I don’t think she’s eating the eggs because the embryos have died. They seemed to be developing appropriately when I candled them, and she has raised a chick to adulthood before.
I’m fond of her, so I’d like to see her end this constant cycle of broody, cannibalistic, broody.
I’m a novice, and could really use some advice from more experienced chicken folks.
Do I have a rooster or are hens sometime loud 😅 ?
Had this one making a lot of noise the past couple mornings, just managed to catch her(him?) on camera! Got all 4 about 3 weeks ago and no eggs yet, they also sleep in a bundle instead of roosting so I am assuming they are still quite young
Edit: Well, I guess Henriette is now Himrette
I love walking out to the run each day
Shout out to my partner for building it lol
“She can’t do it!” “It’s too many!” Mama Pauline has a (very strong) will and has indeed found a way
Just did the first candling to check development on Mama Pauline’s batch of 18. All but one (ironically, the only bantam egg) was developing right on schedule! I honestly didn’t expect her to be THIS successful. I will check again in a week or so to make sure development is on track.
So, enjoy this clip of me trying to give back her brood and her doing her best Jurassic Park dilophosaurus impression.
Chicken Death - Learning Opportunity
Suffered a loss tonight and looking for learning opportunities.
Had a 3year old cinnamon queen pass away. She was fine yesterday, ever squared up to me a bit! She was laying around today, and when my daughter got home she let me know Blanche wasn’t doing so well and she was puking. I felt her crop and it was very soft and watery, so I started to gently massage her crop with her head down. A lot of liquid started coming up - it smelled a bit but not terribly. I thought she was okay and then she just died. I should also note her comb was purplish.
What could I have done differently? Any thoughts what it could be? I’m so sad but want to learn so I know what to do if it happens again.
RIP Blanche 💜
Do you see any roosters?? I'm new to this.
They're all about 7 weeks old. I am pretty sure they're all hens BUT I'm also a new chicken owner and can tell a rooster from a hen unless they're full grown. My one Isa Brown makes me suspicious but the comb isn't red (though the sunset makes it look that way). Please and thank you!
A chicken needs a name
Our young rooster needs a name. He is pictured with his favorite hen, Red Sonya. A few other names from this years flock are MoHawk, Q-tip, Morgana, Galadriel, The Grey Knight, the Butt sisters, Fluffy and Big, Whine-a-dote, and the leghorn sisters, Foghorn and Leghorn. Obviously we are making a point of naming them, but don't take ourselves too seriously. His name used to be Maby Baby , but with him crowing and the undeniable feathers... he needs a better name.
Thanks for your thoughts. May your day be better than mine. Bonus pics... Speedy and Galadriel.
Only one survived- advice needed
I ordered a few more babies to add to my flock but when they arrived yesterday only this little nugget survived the trip (I’m assuming due to the cold snap). I have replacements coming but it’s sounding like it could be 2 weeks before they’re here. I’m worried about this baby being alone that long. I’m giving her a lot of love and attention as you can see but is there anything else we should be doing for her? Should I try to find other chicks locally instead of waiting? Are there things I should add to her brooder to help her feel less alone when she’s in there? I have 5 adult hens but I’m nervous about putting her with them when she’s so little and they haven’t been exposed to chicks before. Any ideas welcome!
Help with coop
I have all sorts of bedding/sand/nesting box material coming in as well. All in all, just looking for helpful feedback on the basic structure/layout of the coop prior to putting the birds in.
Switching to nipple style water, how hard to train?
I am so tired of my hens kicking their shavings into their water dish. I have tried a couple of different styles, and by the end of the day it's either completely full of shavings, or they have dumped it because it is full of shavings and they are looking for the water. I think my last ditch effort to keep water clean for more than a few hours is going to be to swap to the nipple style. All of my hens are a year or older. How hard is it going to be to train them to use this style instead? I am particularly interested in the Omlet brand one. I live in an area where we can get temps in the negative 30s to 40s for several weeks on end in the winter, so I need something that is going to survive both the heat of summer, and the extreme cold of winter.
HELP LIMPING HEN

Floor of Coop
Hey everyone! My husband is currently building our chicken coop using the Third Coast Craftsman plans. I wanted to know, what can we do to the bottom of the coop to make the wood last longer and be easier for cleanup? I've seen some people post pictures of their coops with flooring, but are there some other ideas? Just looking for options to run by my husband! (Pic of our progress so far and my dog)
