I want to go rural but think it will hurt my chances of specialisation
I’m a 2nd year med student and have an interest in ophthalmology.
I hope someone can tell me I’m wrong but from my somewhat extensive research it seems to be that working rurally only helps if you do it for 2 continuous years (something I’d be willing to do), however, from my understanding there are no specific eye departments in hospitals rurally which is required to get points on my CV.
I really want to work rurally in PGY 1/2 but I’d rather do ophthalmology earlier than delay it to get the ophthal specific points which ultimately are worth more.
Also, the ‘important people’ who can help you into things like PHO or reg interviews work in big cities at tertiary hospitals, how could I hope to get a job over someone who has been working at their hospital, making good references and showing face at clinic working for free.
Im not sure if im ranting, asking for someone to tell me im wrong or just asking for general advice. But if you have either of the above I’d appreciate it immensely.
