Winchester Model 62 pump .22

First time posting here, so hello all. I've recently come across a model 62 pump .22 rifle. I never knew there was such a thing. It'll shoot. 22 short, .22, and .22lr cartridges.

It looks to me like it's in serviceable condition with a good cleaning and lubrication.

Can any of you here clue me in to how many of these are floating around and how rare it may be?

The rifle was manufactured in 1936 per the serial number, and it's in pretty darned good condition for being 90 years old.

A blued hamon?

A buddy of mine blues gun barrels as a side gig, and he's gotten pretty good at it. I had him blue (seen in the pictures), a knife I made for a mutual friend. It's a post-apocalyptic zombie killing tanto, and it fits him & his personality to a tee.

Now im working on a few more knives, and I think i may want to try and do a hamon on the karambit. Then blue it if it would show.

My buddy thinks it will. The reason is, on the Remington 870 shotguns he works on, the 4140 steel used in the barrel tube magazine and lug all come out different colors because of the different heat treatment. He told me that, and I thought, "Well, how much difference could there be?" Answer: a lot! Lol.

It made me think that the hamon MAY show up. Have any of you ever tried it? If so, how did it look?

I tried to make a hamon

I got a piece of W-2 and forged out the blade and got it into shape. I used my tempering oven for the normalization and heat treating.

I used refractory cement to make the hamon pattern, let it dry 2 days.

I used Parks 50 for the quenchant and two pieces of angle iron in my vice to put it in once it came out of the oil.

I mixed a 50/50 solution of feric chloride as the echant.

The blade was sanded to 400 grit.

End result, I made a hamon, but.......I'm under impressed with the pattern. What did I do wrong? Cement too thin?

Please chime in.

I made a thing

I tried striking my projects by holding my touchmark by hand while trying to get it all lines up, straight & true. It's almost impossible, so i made a tool holder.

I forged a tang that was tapered and fit well in my hardy hole. I ground bevels in it, then welded it to a piece of flat stock I cut to size. After that, I got a piece of square tubing the size I needed and some flat stock. I cut everything to size and welded it up.

The first picture is my handy work trying to hold the touchmark by hand. The last picture is how it turned out while my tool holder held it.

Much improved.

Transformer 112 worth

I've had this for years, and it's been played maybe.....10 hours?

Short story long, I was gifted a $100.00 guitar years ago by a girlfriend. I didn't play, so I started taking lessons, and after 6 or 8, I figured out I'd have a better chance at growing a 3rd arm out of my forehead. Whatever "it" is, I definitely didn't have "it." This, of course, was after I bought this amp.

I've done woodworking for......52 years now. To say that I'm familiar with woodworking tools, let's say we've met. I figured, how hard would it be to make a guitar? So, I did. It HAD to be the reason I couldn't play, right? It wasn't.

Anyway, this is old, made in the USA and it's really new. How much would it be worth?

Questions on making a hamon

I'm working on 3 blades right now that I've made out of W2. I bought it so I could have a hamon once done, but so far, it isn't going well.

Once the blades were to a point that I was ready to start working on making the hamons, I sand blasted them, then sanded to a smooth finish. Smooth finish sanded to 350, then black compound on a sewn burlap wheel. It's not a mirror finish, but well on the way.

I mixed up my Satanite after making a .....homon template out of painters' tape on wax paper. That way, the pattern was exact one side to the other.

I coated it what I'd call a normal amount. 1/8" maybe? I let it sit for a few hours, then I put them in a 250 oven for 10 minutes, turned it off, and let them cool to room temperature.

I did the above paragraph one more time.

I got mt tempering oven to 1,650 f (per the spec. sheet for normalization), and put them in, and once they got to temp (per the sheet again), I held for 10 minutes. Took them out & let them cool in still air till room temperature.

Until this time, everything was going swimmingly well. As they were nearing room temperature, saw the largest one. One side of the Satanite had fallen off. It was stuck to forge iron oxide laying beside where it should have been.

Crap.

I stopped the process and searched for an anti scale coating. I found & bought ATP-641, and it's on its way.

Besides getting it on before putting the Satanite on, what did I do wrong?

Is putting them in the 250 f oven a bad thing? There were no cracks, and it was dried well & solid looking. The big piece that came off was the entire one side, and it was still on the thin sheet of iron oxide or forge scale.

Let me know!

I bought a roll and used it for the first time with....mixed results i guess.

Those of you who use it, how do you quench? I did my normal heat cycle hot, room temperature twice, and on the 3rd time, put it in the oil. It seemed to stay hot longer.

  1. it could have been because the knife i used it on was too long for my tempering oven, so I had to use the forge. I may have had it too hot as I quenched.

  2. The stainless steel foil insulated the blade, making it cool slowly.

Let me know what I did wrong with it.
