WFAT at Barrackpore, WB
Barrackpore was named so because of the Army cantonment established here by the British during the colonial age. It is now owned by Indian Army. It serves as logistical hub and home to few helicopter squadrons.
The stations is a major station in Sealdah-Naihati line and Barrackpore local terminates here from Sealdah.
New Jalpaiguri is the gateway to Darjeeling and Sikkim. Although The toy train still runs between NJP to Darjeeling. It's better to just take other means of transport. NJP however is a major station connecting to all of the other major stations in India.
Sheoraphuli is famous for it's massive farmer's market place. It's the largest farmers market in Hooghly (maybe largest in the West Bengal but data isn't reliable). This station acts as a junction to Sheoraphuli-Goghat line to Howrah-Bandel Main line. It also acts as a terminal station for Howrah-Sheoraphuli Local train.
Sealdah is the 2nd largest railway complex in India. Sealdah metro connects to Howrah ( Largest railway station in India) and to Salt Lake Sector V via the green line.
Shrirampur was a dutch colony and a trading post on the Hooghly river. It was previously named Fredericknagar after King Frederik V of Denmark. Now a bustling town famous for it's shopping district and cafes. Shrirampur College is the oldest continuously operated college in India. (Since 1815)
Bhadreswar is named after the Bhadreswar temple. It used to be a port city on the Hooghly river and now It's famous for it's mango market and major school that has more than 5000 student(This leads to a traffic jam everyday just before school hours)
Garifa is one of the two stations in the connecting Bandel-Naihati Line. This line acts as a shunt between Howrah- Bandel and Sealdah-Naihati Line. You can see the first bridge across Hooghly river ( The Jubilee bridge) from the station on a good clear day. This line crosses the Hooghly river.
It's the only station in my knowledge that still offers cardboard tickets. Other busy stations has switched to dot matrix printer since 1990s
Bandel is a major junction between Howrah-Bardhhaman , Howrah-Katwa and Bandel-Naihati line. It used to be a Portuguese colony on the banks of Hooghly. The name is a mispronunciation by Portuguese of the word "Bandar", meaning port in Bengali.
Also called Chandernagore ( Moon's city) due to the moon shaped meander in the Hooghly river beside it. "Chandan" nagar is thought to be because sandalwood trade in the said river with france, Chandan means sandalwood in bengali. This used to be a french colony.
