Kalamazoo updates policy on Flock, ALPR contracts

TL;DR: KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Contracts for Flock cameras and other automated license plate readers must now be reviewed by Kalamazoo City Commissioners, regardless if the total cost is below a current purchasing policy threshold.
The vote came down in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Current policy states that the city manager has the authority to make purchases and approve contracts “when the total expenditure of the purchase does not exceed $100,000 and sufficient funding is provided for within the current.”

Manufacturers can get speedier testing times at Camp Grayling

Grayling and TC are gonna get more busy than they already are. Copied the basics below:

_________

Camp Grayling is among four U.S. Army sites that will offer private companies test sites under a streamlined process, officials announced Friday.
Previously, companies said it could take 12 to 18 months to get a time scheduled to test their equipment at a base. Under the new program, it will take about 30 days.

“If you look at conflict around the world, if you look at Ukraine, if you look at these denied environments,  it is really, really, really hard to recreate that in a non-combat area. But we must do it. We must give you a place to go learn and innovate,” Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll said.

The goal is to get new technologies developed, tested and into soldiers’ hands more quickly. Specifically, the program will focus on drones, counterdrone technology, long-range fires and low-cost interceptors. Companies will use a webpage to ask for time on the range.

Milwood Neighborhood Association relaunches with eye on 10-year plan

Portage dweller here, what happened to the last association board?

Either way, cool to see a desire to bring the area together.

——
With a shopping plaza and businesses separated by islands of parking lots, there’s ambition to tap into opportunities to find a central hub to energize the neighborhood.
”It’s just thinking about these things of like what makes a neighborhood whole and how can we create these spaces that people want to go to and have fun at together and to build,” Proczko told News 8. “Seeing the investment at Washington Square is awesome and we need it. Seeing what happened at the farmers market is awesome. Hearing what’s going on on the Northside, like go to Northside Days coming up… There’s awesome stuff happening in Kalamazoo.”

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — The Battle Creek Community Oversight Board said the officers involved in a teen’s second detainment within 10 days this summer underwent counseling and — despite its recommendation — will not be moved from the Washington Heights neighborhood where it happened.

Lawsuit claims Michigan Air National guardsman fired months before deployment

A Michigan Air National Guard member alleges he was fired from his civilian cybersecurity job months before he was expected to deploy in a new lawsuit.
Chris Jones had just started a new job at Southfield-based Electrical Components International as a cybersecurity engineer at the end of March 2025. Around a month after he told his supervisors of an upcoming deployment in September, he told  News 8 that treatment around the office changed before he was ultimately fired.
“You go through life not expecting people to try and pull one over on a regular basis. So the fact that it was happening, my first thought was like, ‘This isn’t right. This is completely unexpected,'” he said during a Zoom interview.

The Brief: Inside Michigan National Guard drone training

Michigan National Guard guys have more than the MQ9 drones now

“The two weeks of on-the-ground training lead up to piloting a NEROS Archer drone and a Skydio X10D. Officials described it as a “hunter-killer” team. The X10D, larger of the two, searches for a target. Once a mark is made, the smaller Archer drones move in, carrying an explosive antipersonnel or antivehicle payload.”
