Bucatstate 120cm ventilation lid modification advice
Hello. I’m planning on buying a bucatstate 120cm which will cost me a little over $630, primarily due to shipping fees. I cannot order directly from the bucatstate website due to living in Australia so I’m buying elsewhere.
My main issue is, I want more ventilation so I can hang a ton of climbing and hanging toys for the mice. I apologise for the poor Infograph as I was working on the ground but I’m wondering if something like this could work? specifically talking to you handy folks out there.
In Australia, it is disgustingly expensive and there are such limited resources for mice, it’s ridiculous. For the size of enclosure I want, I cannot find anything cheaper than $600 after tax and shipping fees. I also refuse to buy specifically secondhand tanks/terrariums because almost all of the ones I see are more expensive than brand new and often always have cracks in them. I got scammed one time when I bought a 4ft long fish tank off Facebook marketplace. I bought it for $50 - it looks perfect with no cracks in the photos, the only issue is there was sand at the bottom. When I took it from the seller and got home and cleaned the tank, there were major cracks at the bottom - unusable. It’s a common practise for stingy people in Australia to do this.
Hello. So I’m currently doing intros with my 7 rattie boys and have gone through everything inside of their cage. I have a massive two bathtubs full of wooden items for them that I have thoroughly cleaned out twice using cold water and vinegar. (I know that wooden items can never 100% be thoroughly cleaned but I tried my best which is why I am making this post). After cleaning the items, i let them out to sit in the sun for 48 hours. However, there are a couple of things they don’t use inside of their cage (that are quite small) and I’m thinking they would be better off going to my future meese. (Shown in the first photo)
For the last year and a half, I’ve been collecting mouse items. (Image 2 and 3) I plan to buy a bunch more stuff for them, including more exercise wheels but I also like to reuse stuff where I can so they don’t go to waste. If I can’t use them, I’ll keep them for my boys but I’d rather give them to the meese.
I’m in need of some advice. Is it totally hopeless in me getting mice? Should I stop thinking about it?
I’ve been desperately wanting to get mice for well over two years now. I have an ethical breeder in mind and am more than capable of providing them with monthly vet visits if needed, a 120x60cm enclosure (ideally, I’d want a group of at least 5-6 mice.) and so much more.
The reason im posting this is because I have 7 pet rats and the mice would need to be kept in the same room and I’m very worried that it might stress both species.
My rats have access to the entire room up to 12 hours a day (they cannot access furniture). I’m currently in the process of doing intros with said 7 rats.
I most likely would not be able to provide the mice with a play pen in my room. I could give them a free roam pen outside of my room but I’m worried putting them in seperate rooms to play would be stressful for them.
I feel like I am being very selfish in wanting to get more animals. My rats are not used to the smell of any sort of animal so I’m extremely concerned they may try to get to the mice even though they wouldn’t be able to. What are your thoughts?
I’ve provided photos of my room for you to get a better idea of my setup.
