Anyone played with glaze combos on ceramic shop brand glazes?

TLDR: im curious if anyone has done mayco glaze combos with the ceramic shop Brad glazes (mostly black, jewelry, cranberry and white)

I have these weirdo double walled bowls and I’d like to glaze them in a way that looks good, shows off the double wall design and is relatively not painful to do.

Im thinking the best way to do that is to dip at least part of the thing, and the only dip glaze i have access to are The Ceramic Shop ones. And for extra color I could do combos of mostly mayco colors on top of or below the dip, or I could paint and wax part of the pot and then dip.

The second photo shows a similar jar I did where I did 3+ coats of glaze on each surface and it took FOREVER and I don’t want to do it again… (if anyone cares the outside it raspberry mist and cinnabar, inside palladium and the blue is micro cerulean with maybe something blue??)

Tangentially related but id also accept feedback on the functionality of the carving itself.

Thanks!

First multicolor test. I suck at registration lol

Other than needing to practice registration, I think this is reasonably not horrific as a first multicolor test with screen less screens and using 6 colors lol

How many coats of ink can you put over eachother? I made the red not go under the burgundy but it would be easier I think if the red was the whole cap and I could overlay an options burgundy on-top (for both registration and also for now NEEDING the print to be 6 colors)

First test of multicolor project

Clearly im bad at registration. Next time positioning my marks differently will help I think.

But not terrible considering this was my first attempt at multicolor and it was 6 screens I threw together this morning and they’re all frameless save the hangers i 3d printed at the top (for hanging to dry/storage but also to hold and keep the screen from warping during use. Seemed to work well). And the fact that the emulsion dropped a bit during drying (still messing with a good setup for my space for that…)

Are y’all doing more than one coat of emulsion on your frames? I haven’t found it’s made a huge difference on my prints so far between, but the more coats the more drippy it gets during drying (I tried 3 coats dried horizontally but that was nightmare sauce; this was 2 coats dried at a slant and it was better but still slightly wonky).

Not that this is relevant at all, but I have the rest of the emulsion sheet stored like an unholy fruit roll up in a cardboard box for later chopping and use lol. It

I did some test making my own screens for the first time and I had some questions about my little test burn

(Please keep in mind I did this kind of deliberately badly to see what would happen if I wasn’t perfect lol. I used a 3d printed scoop and was basically working on the dark because I don’t have appropriate lighting yet. And I doubled up on some of the emulsion just to see how it would affect things and to see what I could get away with )

  1. thoughts on the thickness of this emulsion (pic 1)? Is the thinner part too thin? My only point of reference is the ez print sheets ive used in the past, which were noticeably thicker. Tbh I kind of like the thin side since it’s easier to see through to position lol

  2. any thoughts if a particular exposure time looks better/worse? (Pics 2/3) I just did a basic test of something common I do as a quick test.

  3. should frames be horizontal whole drying? Mine got some little drips on jt.

  4. having probably messed up the sides i exposed, I wanted to double check that this is the correct process. You first coat t he side in contact with the shirt. Burn with image facing side away from the shirt. Squeegee from the side away from the shirt. Is that correct? Ive seen people say to reverse the image on the transparency, which makes me thing I might have messed up the order of things somewhere (which tbh I didn’t really track here but I did notice a thicker and thinner side to the final screens after washing, which I assume was the side the emulsion was first applied to/is the side I used against the shirt for the ez print screens)

  5. if my actual screen prints are coming out sloppy (ink bleeding under image) what would you suggest i look at? (I know my process was a bit Sus… i tested these strips with a popsicle stick as a spreader like a maniac, but that seemed to work well on previous screens when using underglaze lol. Apparently the fabric medium is less forgiving XD I got a few really nice crispy prints and it seemed to not matter that much if I used either side of the screen from what I can tell, so I think it was maybe the applicator that was causing the most issues?

  6. is it sketchy to just leave them outside for an arbitrary after washing to post cure, or is there some predetermined time/intensity about it? They looked like forbidden fruit Roll ups on my deck XD

Also thanks to the folks who suggested the diy.Eli reusable frame - I had all the stuff for it lying around/I was able to 3d print myself some quick clips for it lol (pic 4)

Thanks!!

I was curious if there’s a way to make permanent screens (or super durable ones) for designs you just want to have on hand all the time. I assume washing them out will degrade them over time?

And if anyone has tried coating frameless screens. My end goal application (really small fabric prints and underglaze stencils) doesn’t need frames, so I was thinking maybe a temporary frame similar to a tufting frame or an embroidery hoop or window screen frames would work well enough to stretch the mesh and get the emulsion on and then just chop it into little pieces to expose? (I have tried ez screen with goo success, it’s just expensive in bigger sizes)

I know you can reuse frames but for recurring stuff it would’ve easier to not have to remake them all the time lol. I’ve also heard you can store frames before burning as long as they’re stored properly. Curious to hear peoples experience with that if they have any.

I was also considering using the ecotex pwr purple but im open to other suggestions. Using led to expose and primarily using water based inks atm.

Thanks!
