When I first joined ancestry.com I was so excited about all the "finds" in my family tree. Then there was conflicting info on family search. Then both versions of the info on my great-great grandmother on myheritage under trees of different people. And ZERO sources on any of it. These tools seem like a giant circle jerk. No data quality checks to eliminate duplicates. It's just a free for all. So, today, I'm working on my great-great grandparents' timeline and making post-it notes for each "fact" I can find only if it is confirmed by a document of some sort (Census, deed, birth, death or marriage records, etc.) Then I will redo my tree from scratch. I feel like these tools are more about selling you more tools than getting to actual source info. I was just curious if anyone felt this same aggravation. Thanks for the opportunity to rant, anyway!
EDIT AND UPDATE: Thanks to all who have commented - I appreciate everyone's thoughts and contributions and welcome more. I switched to what I know, Excel, LOL, and constructed a simple timeline spanning about 65 years for my great-great grandparents. I identified my source for "facts" and identified other info as "clues" to be researched. Just having this visual is already helping me identify where I need to look next, e.g., "What does the 1880 census show?" This will help keep me on track and focused vs. falling prey to the siren song of the "hints" from the little green leaves. :)
