I might not finish Pillars of the Earth but I know I want to

As the title says I’m finding myself less and less interested in this book. It’s good, don’t get me wrong, very good, but I’m finding myself skimming more than I should. I’m probably almost 3/4s of the way through >!Aliena and Jack just reunited!< so please no spoilers past that.

I find that most of the characters lack nuance particularly William, he’s most certainly hate-able but it feels like he exists solely to be the bad guy. Even Phillip who is fun to root for feels pretty one dimensional as well. Sometimes character motives just feel unbelievable.

I also feel like I’ve started to see behind the curtain a bit in that the story is a bit of a perpetual pendulum swing: things go better and better for Kingsbridge and when things are really looking good some form of tragic setback occurs, rinse and repeat.

Maybe the last few hundred pages will change my mind but I find myself being drawn to my next reads. I’m currently taking a break from pillars to read Neuromancer (talk about a change of pace). I would like to see how the story ends but as a father of a two year old I only have so much time to read and the last thing I want to do is force read something that’s not really doing it for me.

Change my mind, or reinforce what’s got me losing interest, I’m just interested in what folks think on this.

Love y’all

A Desirable Dilemma

Hi y’all, I’m hoping to get some other perspectives on my next reads. I’ve decided I wanna jump into Sun Eater and I’m pretty excited for that but realized it’s also fully available on Spotify in the audiobook format which I’ve heard is very well done, but limits the amount of time you can listen per month (so lame). I usually listen to one series on audio while reading something else. I do have Sun Eater on my Kindle so I’m debating doing the immersive read thing or just listening to it over a long period of time thanks to Spotify limits on listening time and reading something else

A couple other series I was thinking of jumping into are the Luna Trilogy and Texicalaan. If anyone has ready either of these, I’d love to hear what you think!

I’m a big fantasy reader and much less experienced in sci-fi but not a total newbie. I plan on rereading Malazan sometime soon throwing some sci-fi in before that feels like a good move.

Thanks y’all!

What’s Next?

I just finished Lonesome Dove and absolutely loved it. I mostly read fantasy and expect to jump into another series soon (I know darkness comes before is the start of a pretty big one) but maybe got the more realistic bug for the moment. I’m pretty equally interested in reading each of these so without going too deep into what I look for in a read I’d just like to see what everyone thinks is the next best read after Lonesome Dove. Thanks!!
