Modrić’s departure means far more than just a veteran hanging up his boots
It marks the end of the last midfield presence at Real Madrid with the ability to control the game’s global tempo and space. After Kroos retired Modrić was still there using his world class close control under pressure and penetrative through passes to bring order to the chaos up front. Now Real Madrid’s midfield is made up of Bellingham a goalscoring box to box runner Valverde who offers progress and long range shooting and Camavinga or Tchouaméni who handle interception and transitional play. None of these midfielders can hold their position under pressure turn and play a pass that splits two lines of defense open.
