England at the Azteca has trap game written all over it

This is the exact kind of England game that makes everyone nervous before it even starts.

Mexico at the Azteca, home crowd going insane, altitude, weird weather talk, and a team that still hasn’t conceded. That is not a normal last-16 away day.

England have the players to win it, obviously. Kane dragged them out of trouble against DR Congo, Bellingham gives them chaos in a good way, and Tuchel will probably want a much calmer start.

But if England begin this like they did last game, Mexico are not going to wait around politely. The first 20 minutes could get horrible fast.

Mexico finally broke their knockout curse. Now they get England in their own house. That is a ridiculous script.

Brazil vs Norway feels way less comfortable than Brazil fans want it to

Brazil should be the favorite here, but this is not the easy version of that sentence.

Norway have Haaland, Odegaard, a team that actually knows what it is, and that weird little stat that Brazil have still never beaten them. Four games, zero Brazil wins. That is exactly the kind of fact people laugh at until the match gets tense.

Brazil have more names, obviously. Vini is flying, Neymar is available, Raphinha might be back off the bench. But Paqueta being out matters, and Norway are not going to need ten chances if Haaland gets the right ball once.

Feels like Brazil either kill this early, or everyone starts remembering 1998 way too loudly.

The France-Paraguay penalty showed why clear VAR screens matter.

The France-Paraguay penalty is probably going to be argued about for a while.

Live, it didn’t look super obvious. The ref let play go, Paraguay thought it was normal contact, and then VAR brought it back.

After the replay, at least everyone could see what the referee was judging: contact in the box, second look on the monitor, penalty given.

You still don’t have to agree with it. France fans will say it was enough. Paraguay fans will say it was soft. Both reactions make sense.

But this is where the screen matters. VAR doesn’t remove controversy, but a clear replay makes the argument less messy.

With Hisense supporting the VAR display technology this tournament, these moments have been easier to follow on screen. Not perfect, not controversy-free, but clearer.

At this point, what weakness does France even have?

But their defense with Digne Saliba Upa Kounde are also among the top.Everyone knows about their superstar attacking trio, Dembele Mbappe and Olise.Deschamps seems to have not stopped studying the modern game and somewhat keeping up with the tactical trendsBut every team has to have some weakness right?

Any underdogs likely to make it to the semifinals?

Is there any underdog that is likely to pull to the semifinals? I’m happy for France(2018) and Argentina(2022) but kinda want to see new winners. Really thought Capo Verde had a shot at this.

Canada had the energy, Morocco had the knockout punch

Canada started like a team that actually believed this could happen.

High press, crowd behind them, Morocco looking a little uncomfortable for a while. And then the game did that cruel knockout thing where the team that wastes the better early spell gets punished later.

Ounahi scoring twice is the whole story basically. Morocco did not need to look amazing for 90 minutes. They just needed a few clean moments and they killed the game with them.

For Canada, 3-0 feels harsh. It was not some embarrassing no-show. But at this level, we played well for stretches doesn’t really save you.

Morocco into another quarter-final now. Canada go out, but this tournament still changed how people talk about them.

France-Paraguay felt more like a street fight than a World Cup knockout game

That France-Paraguay game was ugly in a way you don’t really see unless a team decides the only way to survive is to make everything uncomfortable.

Paraguay were physical all night. France had most of the ball but never really got rhythm. Every time it looked like they might speed the game up, there was another body, another bump, another little stop.

Mbappe sounding annoyed after the game makes sense. He scored the penalty and France are through, but he spent most of the night getting dragged into a game Paraguay clearly wanted.

I don’t even mean that as pure criticism. Paraguay almost made it work. But once a match gets that messy, the referee has to control it early. This one never really felt under control.

France look scary, but Paraguay already made one giant look normal

France are the better team. Everyone knows that. But this is also the exact kind of match where being the better team can get annoying fast. Paraguay just knocked out Germany by turning the game into a fight, then a penalty test, then a national holiday. That does something to a team’s confidence. France have Mbappé flying, Dembélé and Barcola scoring, and enough bench options to make most teams jealous. Still, Deschamps talking about the heat makes sense. Philadelphia in that weather, against a team that wants to slow you down, is not exactly a clean football lab. Paraguay probably won’t care if this is ugly. France probably need to make it not ugly early. If it’s 0-0 after an hour, everyone starts remembering Germany.

The France-Paraguay penalty showed why clear VAR screens matter

France vs Paraguay was always going to leave people arguing.
The penalty call was the big one. The ref first let play go, Paraguay felt it was normal contact, France wanted a second look, and then VAR brought the referee to the monitor.
After the replay, the decision changed.
You can still disagree with it. Some fans will say there was enough contact. Others will say it was too soft for a knockout game. That part probably won’t go away.
But at least the replay gave everyone the same picture to talk about, instead of just guessing from the live angle.
That’s where the screen matters. VAR doesn’t remove controversy, but a clearer review makes the process easier to follow.
As Hisense supports the VAR display technology this tournament, moments like this show why the quality of the replay screen is part of the football conversation now.
What did you see: clear penalty, or still too soft?

What an absolute joke of a game, I really feel like I'm watching high school soccer

The longer this single game went on between France and Paraguay the more I felt like I was watching children play, I dont mean the level of play I mean flopping fouls that made no sense no fouls that were clearly bad, the favoritism in this event had reached an all time joke. I miss what this sport used to be

How many goals do you think France will score in this game?

Although Paraguay beat Germany and the team always gives European teams a hard time, France's attackers are just too luxurious, including Mbappé, Dembélé, and Olise. I guess France can score in the first half

Happy to see the Canadian keeper come out

I’ve been waiting for one of these teams facing elimination to start to put everything on the line as the final minutes tick.

in hockey they now pull the goalie when down by 2 with 3-5 minutes left. good to see.

am I missing anything, any reason not to do this in soccer?

as a keeper I would come out at the end of my games when down by a goal. at a minimum to the opposing side‘s half circle.

Argentina survived Cape Verde, but that did not feel comfortable at all

Argentina are through, but that was way closer than it needed to be.

Cape Verde did not just park the bus and hope. They actually kept coming back, twice, against the defending champions. That is the part that makes this feel less like a normal underdog loss and more like a proper warning for Argentina.

Messi still had the moment, Romero still found the winner, and Argentina still know how to survive these games. Fine.

But if Cape Verde can drag them into 120 minutes and make them look tired, Egypt are definitely watching that thinking there is something there.

Cape Verde go home, but honestly they leave with more respect than half the teams still in the tournament.

Canada vs Morocco feels like the first real “are they actually ready?” test for Canada

Canada have already done the historic part, which is probably why this one feels awkward now.

They beat South Africa, Davies is back in the picture, and the home crowd is still alive. But Morocco are a very different problem. They don’t play like a team hoping for a moment anymore. They look like a team that knows exactly how annoying they are to play against.

Bounou in a tight game is already bad news. Hakimi gives them that outlet every time things get messy. And Saibari has been one of those tournament players people pretend they knew about all along.

Canada probably need this to become physical, fast, a little uncomfortable. Morocco probably don’t mind that either.

Feels like a game where one bad five-minute stretch could end the whole dream.
