Continuing to develop resources for Haskell Canyon Bike Park

The Trailforks will continue to be updated. 4 trails were added today, notably showing the Perimeter trail that takes you around the entire park and is more suitable for beginners or gravel riders not looking to tackle actual downhill trails: https://www.trailforks.com/region/haskell-canyon-bike-park-74120/

I'm also compiling a youtube playlist of any Haskell video I see, which will allow you to preview everything about the park: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLIz43Zu1mIBEqraflIS6zIKz_wB0uUvjJ

Please ask any questions in this thread. I'd love to know what peoples thoughts are on the park and what concerns they may have surrounding the park / visiting the area.

What do you look for in a dirt jumper? (geometry specific)

With BMX every frame was nearly the same, and you would generally only make adjustments to cockpit to makes changes. So it was brain dead easy.

With MTB the numbers are so vastly different it makes it easy to invalidate 90% of the frames when you're looking for something, so you basically just pick price, build, and linkage.

But with dirt jumpers I've landed in between, the uncanny valley of 'all very similar, but generally different enough to change the feel'.

Are you looking for a zippy 380mm chainstay? Or a more stable 400mm?

Are you looking for longer reach bikes to seemingly scale with height? Or do you just buy short bikes no matter what knowing you want the bike to be nimble?

My GF just bought a Propain Trickshot and it's fairly tiny on me but I really do like how it feels, even if it feels twitchy on larger jumps.

Considering I am not spinning (or unlikely to) and not tail whipping, should I just look for a more stable 390-400mm RC rig? And maybe a longer reach and taller stack?

Orrr do you think the margins are so small with all dirt jumper bike it basically doesn't matter... Just treat them like BMX bikes and adjust the cockpit of whatever you can afford, etc.

One of the sickest riding weekends ever. Went to a wedding near Temecula, decided to turn it into a bike park trip. 4 parks, 2 days

Genuine question for SC fans, particularly after the Tallboy spy shot... What are your thoughts on the current direction of the brand?

Spy shots release on Pinkbike show a proposed Tallboy proto sporting a horst link and not VPP. Akin to the swap they made on the Vala e-bike, whereas the other ebikes still used VPP.

The updates to the long travel bikes have drawn a collective shrug from the community, though that's much better than a collective pitchforking. Which almost happened with the wireless only CC bronson which I believe was not reproduced for the Nomad? Not sure if they're completely abandoning that silly concept.

Along with the concept of just adding 10mm travel to models and calling it a day. Currently being rumored to occur to the Tallboy as well. A part of me wonders if they even intend to bring the 5010 back and if it will get similar treatments. Not to mention what might happen to the Blur in the future.

Does this bother you? Is it a big ol nothing burger? Is the brand's quality mostly held in it's quality, warranty, and service? Do you think they're getting a similar ride feel out of horst or are you planning to look elsewhere for other short link bikes with superior pedaling platforms?

It's been interesting to see brands smack against this wall of diminishing returns and seem almost unsure where to go. It's clear the previous generation was STELLAR and the updates we've seen are... 'Good'. But likely not reason enough to upgrade, if you have the previous gen.

And while the updates don't quite have a reason to be seen as 'bad'... It's easy to see how long time SC fans see abandoning VPP as a step backwards.

First time the final is separated by a point. Potentially only the second time a final will be won by a trailing rider.

While there has been a title tied into the last round (the infamous RC and Reedy year with Bubba not far behind, and then the illegal fuel debacle)... There has not specifically been a year with only 1 point separating the top 2 riders.

Also, if Hunter wins the title, it will be only the second time a rider trailing at the final round surpasses the red plate rider and wins. (The other time being Stanton sneaking past Bradshaw in 1992. Bradshaw never won a premier class title :( he was 2nd twice, including 92)

Lil bits of history no matter which way it is sliced. We're livin in the good times, boys!

I don't know why it bugs me so much, I guess because it's my dream bike I scour marketplaces for but... Anyone aware of a functional reason why the geometry charts are different for 2017 as opposed to 18-19, despite identical appearance/design?

Seems like... They may have done a smaller ride-4 'chip' for the last 2 years for some reason, while the first model year of that generation had a wider ride-4 geo chip which is ideally the one I want if there is a difference.

Obviously the difference is TINY so it's whatever I'll take any of them, beggars can't be choosers. But the highest setting on the 2017 is VERY good. 66 front end, 75 seat tube, 0mm BB drop.

Seems like an odd decision to make mid production run but... If it's only the chip piece I suppose it's not expensive to alter.

Thanks for checking this pointless post...

not officially open. though the locals have been riding it in which it honestly kinda needs. it seems like the opening date is being pushed back by logistics including the entry road. obviously be respectful of workers if visiting pre-opening

As a former BMXer, the t-bog was nice but seeing a MTBer do an ET was a throwback... Gave me a Jimmy Neutron brain blast. Love it.

I wanted to understand the numbers better. Initially I wanted to know when the industry hit "10k" for uhhh "luxury" bikes, since people love to bring that up all the time.

With imperfect data, I found Cannondale releasing a high end RZ140 in 2010 that went for 6200, which would be 10k in today's dollars. (But again I'm probably missing some data pre-2012.)

In 2012, Scott released the high end Spark for 10,500 which would work out to 15750. The highest end Scott Spark would often be the go to luxury bike for high prices even up to today, though many other brands will squeak in from time to time such as BMC, Giant, Speshy, etc.

The prices rise very gradually, and follow inflation as you would predict until you know when. Unsurprisingly, for 2022 models both Scott and Speshy release 15k luxury models which would work out to 19000 in today's dollars.

The funny bit, of course, being that they never changed and now that they remain 15000 even today they are actually cheaper than the luxury bikes of 2011-2020. But what about budget bikes?

Who cares about the sWorks stuff barely anyone gets sooo... I'll pulled up a couple comparisons since many models (or even brands) don't even go back that far. (Or data is missing.)

In 2007, you could get Norco Fluids in a similar range as you can now. The bottom of the barrel 4 costing you 1365 then (2275 with inflation)... And the top of the line 1 trim going for 2950 (4900 with inflation). The modern Fluid 4 costs 2000 and the Fluid 1 costs 3900.

One of the mainstays of budget biking, the Giant Stance line was started in 2015. Back then you could get 3 builds of Stance, which would go for 1470(2075), 1905(2690), and 2650(3740).

Now you just buy one standard model for 2200. Needless to say it is more bike than the original top of the line 2015 Giant Stance could ever hope to be. That goes for all bikes.

I mean, naturally, some of those old 'luxury' bikes were 3x or 2x builds, no dropper, maybe not even tubeless compatible. Now you get electronic shifting, dropper, and suspension for a luxury purchase. Or if you really wanna say fcuk it a whole ass motor to power the bike... :)

So bikes are better than ever, prices are either back to normal or cheaper than they ever were... But how does that FEEL? With purchasing power down... Do you at least feel you have a much better bike for whatever you paid? (Or in other words, you don't HAVE to spend 15k now because a 3-5k bike is so good? Or was that always the case?)

remember, with better infrastructure, a version of this can be our daily lives. dont stop pushing. dont keep compromising. dont settle for paint in a gutter. plant the seed of the tree that provides shade for the next generation...
