Cat toileting advice

I’ve asked this on r/catadvice too but I thought I’d post it here as well. My parents are vets themselves so they’ve been able to help but I’d thought I’d see if there’s any other advice that they haven’t thought of.

I’ve had my 6 year old boy for a few weeks now. Before I adopted him I was aware he can be tricky when it comes to toileting. Initially he would always pee and poop on the tiled surfaces in my bathroom and toilet so I started leaving the doors closed with the hope that he would then opt for the litter box. Instead he just did his business outside the closed doors so I moved his tray to directly outside the bathrooms. It was somewhat successful but then he suddenly started doing his business against the wall in my living room. I then moved both trays there and 90% of the time he’ll pee in them and about 50% of the time he’ll poop in them. I woke up this morning to poop literally in between his trays on the floor.
