Spin of the Day: Bricks are Heavy by L7

This is one of the best albums in the 90s and doesn't get enough recognition IMHO. It's polished but nasty. The themes in this album are just as relevant as back then.

You can hear that Butch Vig production which you either love or hate. :) L7 has never sounded so polished, but I think that shine gives more depth to the lyrics and the underlying sludge hits even harder.

  • Shitlist is just a helluva fucking song.
  • Wargasm. This song feels even more powerful today. Lyrics are just genius.
  • Pretend We're Dead.
  • Diet Pill. Fucker got what he deserved
  • Mr. Integrity. What a diss track.

Spin of the Day: Willy and the Poorboys by CCR

Maybe it’s my inner Dude, but I have such a soft spot for CCR.

They had so many bangers back to back in a short period of time. What other bands have put together amazing albums like this in such a short period of time? King Gizzard. Who else?

I kind of feel like people sleep on this album a little bit even though it has a few huge hits of theirs. My favorite song on the whole album might be Effigy followed by Feelin’ Blue.

Spin of the Day: Street Worms by Viagra Boys

Heard them for the first time when they opened for QOTSA and was instantly in love.

Drummer is a badass. Bassist is a madman. The saxophonist is amazing. And Seb is perfect in every way.

  • Slow Learner - The drums and bass are so locked in and then you mix that sax over the top... holy shit. And then the synth hits.
  • Sports - Buying things off the internet. Perfect song in almost every way.
  • Just Like You - Masterpiece.
  • Shrimp Shack - I don't even like shrimp, and this song makes me want to eat them. With your mom in the dirt.

Spin of the Day: In Times New Roman by QOTSA

Of all the times I've seen Queens of the Stone Age live (12+), I think this tour is when they were at their most "put together" especially Jon+Mikey really thumping.

It's hard for me to pick a favorite QOTSA album, but this one has so many fucking bangers:

  • Made to Parade - Describes my experience with corporate life almost too perfectly. Run. Like a rabbit. As fast as you can.
  • Time & Place - You're such a drag, all that's left is a decent butt.
  • Negative Space - Textured. Lovely falsetto. A minute or so in, there's this guitar that rises and falls almost like being resuscitated. Wow.
  • Sicily - Jon+Mikey hitting it hard.
  • Straight Jacket Fitting - Carpe demon.

I'm a huge Dave Grohl fanboy and love foo fighters unapologetically. Mood struck this morning!

I'm probably 4 total listens in since it came out.

I really enjoy the middle 1/3 of the album. Your Favorite Toy --> If You Only Knew --> Spit Shine --> Unconditional is a killer run. I really think the drumming is well done, but I'm a huge Ilan fan.

I saw them for the first time in 1994 in Lawrence, KS and was blow the fuck away. I mean a dude playing the upright bass and a second dude rocking out on a laptop?!?! A few years later he had upgraded to rig with zip disks.

This album doesn't have a bad track on it - reminds me of how good music was in the mid-90s.... and how open radio still was to truly weird music. Imagine having Jesus Lizard, Soul Coughing, Morphine, and then Ween. Crazy times.

Uh, Zoom Zip --> Down To This --> Mr. Bitterness is my favorite run of songs on the album.
