So, how does arbitration work?

So, the way I've seen it, using pretty much any modern company's services requires signing a TOS that includes an arbitration clause. Assume a company wrongs me and I go 'ok i wanna sue them' and get forced into arbitration. Does that follow like, regular law but behind closed doors?

Who presides over the arbitration? Presumably, whatever billion dollar company arranges the arbitrator. How do I as the potentially wronged individual know that the arbitrator is non biased? If it is non-biased, why does arbitration benefit the company? Is there an explicit kind of 'NDA' associated with the arbitration process?

Just curious about the whole process, really.

Weird XFINITY Customer Support Interaction

Just moved into a new apartment and was having issues setting up my internet, so I went on to the official app and started chatting with a support agent. We went through a bunch of stuff to get my internet working but we couldn't.

The agent said something along the lines of "I can provide you with a no charge line on your phone to run internet on until the technician comes out next week, if you'd like."

I said sure and he asked for my phone's IMEI 2 number to check for compatibility. I was pretty frustrated after wrestling with my internet all day, so I provided it to him. He then sent me a link to an "IGuard" website asking for my DOB and SSN. This set off alarm bells and I politely declined and ended the chat. The site DID already have my address/name/account number from XFINITY but it probably could have been plugged in by this guy if it wasn't legit.

My question is: was this some kind of scam, and if so, what type? Have I made an error in giving him my IMEI2 number? Can he do anything harmful with this and what should my next steps be?

The rest of the interaction was fairly normal internet support stuff and was legit. It was all on the xfinity official mobile app.
