Got laid off in last September, was gettting tired of FE Web anyways. Want to work more in embedded/robotics/infra, but understand I have a long way to go. Career changed into SWE with a full BS in CS, worked 3 years in FE Web at a public company (household name but not a tech company), and now doing a MS in CS.
I have been applying to any SWE jobs in NYC, as well as tech adjacent jobs like solutions/content/whatever engineering. I've made it to one final round for a solutions engineering position, and a couple first rounds. Only have gotten one callback from a cold apply to a Content Engineering position at Bloomberg and got dropped after what I thought was a home run first round. Rest of interviews was from external outreach to me on Linkedin.
Want to know how I can increase my cold apply response rate? Also will be moving back to the city to network in person more since I'm currently at my parents in AZ. I have pretty good people/social skills, and while I'm not a LC god I'm not totally clueless. No mention of AI on my resume but I have used Claude and Cursor to build personal projects and mention that when asked in interviews. Applying on BuiltIn and LinkedIn, then company career pages for larger NYC employers.
