Cook Islands : 60 Years of the House of Ariki

^(Commemorating 60 years of the House of Ariki is a tribute grounded in the Cook Islands’ own cultural institutions and official statements. ^(The House of Ariki, established in 1966 to advise on matters of custom and tradition, remains a cornerstone of cultural leadership, as highlighted in national commemorations and Ui Ariki Day events marking the 60 year milestone . Netherlands : HIM The Emperor Naruhito of Japan Speech at State Banquet

^(I shared this speech because it offers rare personal reflections, something we seldom hear from the Imperial Family. During the June 2026 State Visit to the Netherlands, it also highlighted the genuine warmth between the Dutch Royal Family and Their Majesties the Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan.)

^(Princess Beatrix’s presence and long standing support make these personal moments especially striking, underscoring the depth of friendship between the two royal houses.)

^(I also found it noteworthy that Queen Máxima personally phoned Empress Masako to offer encouragement ahead of the State Visit. The speech revealed that the Empress’s father, Hisashi Owada, served as a judge and later President of the International Court of Justice until 2018. It was also touching to learn that the Dutch Royal Family extended warm hospitality to Empress Masako’s parents during his tenure in The Hague.)

Japan : Which would you choose as new ambassador to Japan? - Horse Drawn Carriage or Car

How New Ambassadors Present Credentials

Japan’s imperial protocol for newly appointed ambassadors is one of the most formal and symbolically rich diplomatic ceremonies in the world.

  1. Arrival at Tokyo Station

New ambassadors begin at Tokyo Station, arriving by official vehicle. They are met by Imperial Household staff and prepared for transport to the Imperial Palace.

  1. Choice of Transport: Carriage or State Vehicle

Ambassadors may choose between:

  • Ceremonial horse‑drawn carriage (State Carriage No. 4, built in 1913), or
  • Imperial state vehicle (Toyota Century Royal)
  1. Procession to the Imperial Palace

If the ambassador selects the carriage:

  • The procession departs Tokyo Station around 10:00 or 10:25 AM, depending on scheduling.
  • The route passes through the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens.
  • Public spectators are asked to remain quiet and avoid startling the horses.

If weather is poor or temperatures are extreme, the carriage is replaced by a limousine procession.

  1. Ceremony in the Matsu‑no‑Ma (State Room)

At the Imperial Palace, the ambassador presents:

  • Letters of Credence from their Head of State
  • Letters of Recall for their predecessor

His Majesty the Emperor receives the documents in the presence of:

  • The Minister for Foreign Affairs or another Minister of State
  • Senior Imperial Household officials

This formal act marks the ambassador’s official recognition by Japan.

  1. Post‑Ceremony Courtesy

After presenting credentials:

  • The ambassador conveys greetings from their Head of State.
  • A brief exchange follows, often touching on bilateral relations.
  • The ambassador returns to Tokyo Station by the same transport used earlier.

Historical and Cultural Notes

The protocol dates back to 1871, when Japan first established modern diplomatic procedures. Carriages were then the international standard for state ceremonies, and Japan preserved this tradition even after automobiles became common.

State Carriage No. 4

  • Built in 1913
  • Decorated with lacquer and gold takamaki‑e
  • Still used for official ceremonies more than a century later

Coachmen’s Uniforms

Based on the 1911 Imperial Household Ordinance on Official Uniforms, maintaining continuity with Meiji‑era court aesthetics.
