With the neo-religion of UFOs, an interesting mess emerges.
From the standpoint of diamat (dialectical materialism), matter is infinite and eternal. This is at least a working hypothesis from the standpoint of natural sciences, but in fact it is a fundamental philosophical principle derived from all of science and practice. Man is highly developed matter, and consciousness is a property of highly developed matter.
Now watch closely: that means somewhere there must be even more highly developed matter and its properties – infinitely more highly developed, i.e. like "God" (and "his angels"), but materialistic. Allegedly. This is a classic logical extrapolation and anthropomorphism. That's where most "ufologists" start dancing.
But in diamat, this conclusion is categorically rejected. Consciousness is a product of socio-labour practice (not just brain complexity, but social relations). If we imagine a hypothetical object with a qualitatively different structure (e.g. plasma-based life in a star or a collective galactic intelligence), its "consciousness" would be so different that comparing it to ours on a "higher/lower" scale would be meaningless – it would be a new qualitative form, not a superstructure over human consciousness.
That is, if extraterrestrials of such a high level (a global collective intelligence) exist – we should detect:

• Purposeful changes in entropy (ordering of chaos on scales impossible for random processes).
• Super-efficient energy cycles (efficiency > 100% is thermodynamically impossible, but we could see the use of nuclear or other reactions with unprecedented purity).
• Global synchronization of natural processes inexplicable by the natural course of events (e.g. climate change with a precise mathematical rhythm, not as a chaotic response to emissions).
• Informational patterns in the structure of vacuum or cosmic microwave background radiation that carry signs of semantic (meaningful) load, not noise.
• For example, we cannot detect transformation of fundamental constants as long as we are humans in the modern sense. We should have detected natural anomalies clearly indicating the existence of such more highly developed matter, but from the standpoint of strict modern science, we have not detected them. Ufologists dispute this. And since all this is complicated, but popularizing it is more than easy, and money from movies and books flows like a river, especially in the US with its huge percentage of creatively believing people, including many sectarians – ufology must exist! And trillions of black budgets will be allocated to the military and special services, and they will spend a tiny fraction of it to maintain all those witnesses and UFO prophets, who will with serious faces feed the public all sorts of disinformation mixed with truth (not even 90% truth), thus covering up the reality – e.g. that the super-rich bourgeoisie who own the military-industrial complex do not obey the state, and some special services and security forces, if necessary, work directly for them. But. If we analyze religious scriptures and modern scientific works on UFOs, it turns out that in reality there is indeed something that: 1) moves in space, and this movement is perceived by us as ignoring known laws of physics; 2) affects matter, including us; 3) by affecting us, it also affects our consciousness, causing hallucinations, including mass ones, the form of which depends on the upbringing of a person of a given era. What it is – we do not know, because we have not even begun a proper scientific study of this phenomenon. The main reason is capitalism. First, it is very expensive, because even to properly detect the presence of this phenomenon in the motion of the rest of matter, we need to study huge volumes of the planet's space in a comprehensive way, using the maximum of advanced instruments available. Second, to recoup the costs of this study, we have to build a whole religion around it, make movies, write books, massively mobilize special services and the military, and so on. To at least begin to understand what the Phenomenon is (UFOs are just one of its manifestations, along with other paranormal phenomena) – we need systematic organization of efforts by the entire planet, the vast majority of its population, leading scientists from various fields working together. We need communism!
