UBC Bursary program - looking to speak to someone w experience

Hey,

I got a really vague response from financial aid at UBC about the bursary program. So I want to see if there are any current students or alumni with experience.

My questions include:

  1. Did you receive a bursary after demonstrating unmet needs?
  2. Was the bursary calculator accurate for you?
  3. What factors do they use to calculate your unmet need? Does it include living expenses or no?

my parents are 63 and 66, Im 25 and about to start law school in Canada, after living abroad for the past nearly 8 years (I spent about 10 months living w them during that time period).

i am now choosing between to law schools, both top three in the country, but on opposite sides of the country. one is more prestigious, with amazing financial aid and package that would take some stress off, and the other is less prestigious, but also more affordable (less need for financial aid) and closer to my family.

i have been hoping to take advantage of some summer opportunities that would allow me to be paid and work while visiting long distance bf at the more prestigious uni, which is making me feel conflicted. This opportunity also aligns w my goals and dreams in law. If this opportunity didn’t exist, I would just live closer to my family.

i feel like I need to choose between more prestigious school+opportunities/long distance relationship and my family, and I’m overcome with guilt about it everyday. I’m actually like frozen up and can’t make this decision. when I graduate my dad will almost be 70, and I feel bad that I’m not spending this time with him, and it may be possible that I move abroad again a few years after graduating. I love my family a lot and they are important to me…

how do you deal with these feelings and what is a productive way to make the decision ??
