Poorly fitting cheap suit for law school? Tailoring necessary?
So I bought 2 suits, probably 500 total, ig cheap by most standards but about 5x what I felt they should be. Then I lost 12kg. They're visibly huge. Pants are 3 sizes too big, jacket comically wide.
What's the typical advice? Is it fine in to have an ill fitting suit 1L-2L?
Or do I go to a random tailor off of Google maps, spend 50% of the suit cost to get them adjusted? Just buy a new suit from Moores for $600?
Atp almost considering selling them on marketplace and going nude with a painted on suit, not sure if that's allowed.
UofA index score?
Would any folks that have applied to UofA JD in the past be willing to comment on how accurate they think the index score formula on CanLawForum is?
TLDR: Index scores of 242 or above are mentioned as auto-admit territory in the past and the formula is (GPA on 4.0 scale * 22.5) + (LSAT score)
Thank you!
Unknown Next Steps.
As title suggests, Canadian student with approx. 3.5 gpa going into senior year. Always was vaguely interested in law school bet never truly took the leap, trying to see what my options are going into next year. I have a return offer at my internship currently lined up, and planning on taking the LSAT next month as my first sitting and expecting a high 160s score. Honestly looking for some advice, had a few hardships throughout university that lowered my GPA but aiming for senior year to hopefully bring it up to 3.6 at least. I would love to go to school in the States, particularly in NY but my top choices would be Canadian schools like Osgoode.
If there is anybody in a similar situation, please let me know or if anyone was in a similar situation as a potential splitter (as I have not written the LSAT yet).
Articling Status - Not Approved
My articling began on July 6th, and I submitted my LSO start of placement before my start date and I even followed up with LSO on July 6th as it said my Experiential Training Details shows as "Incomplete" and whether everything is in good order on my end and they responded on July 8th that my Experiential Training Details will not turn to complete until I finish my articling term but they made no mention that there was anything wrong with my placement record.
I was just casually browsing my LSO profile today and found out that my articling status said "Not Approved" and I have been articling for one month and now there is a chance this month would not even count toward my articling term. As per LSO standards, the lawyer I am articling for is on the list of approved principal lawyers so there is no issue there.
Has anyone else experienced this - if so, please let me know how you rectified the issue.
Do I bother grinding in 3L
Hello, I have articling lined up in a government job I really like. Some lawyers say Bs are fine.
While I want to stick with government and summered with them, I recognize that hire back isn’t a guarantee. I’m also doing clinic this year. Re grades, do I still grind to get as high as possible since I don’t truly know whether I’ll be hired back as a lawyer even if they have strong hireback? Most people say to just 3LOL, but I’m terrified I’ll lose my job and be back on the market.
I have a handful of As, B+ average after 2L.
realistic budget
I often flicker between extremely frugal and extremely spend happy so i’m hoping i average out to be average in my spending
Basically most months in the semester i spend about $1700 but the oast two months have been closer to $2800 (😭😭😭 skincare, pantry staples, hair care etc and some very indulgent purchases lol)
my fixed expenses utilities and the like is $900. groceries $300. i’m trying to not go crazy in debt but also not be miserable .
what’s y’all’s monthly budget during the semester and during the summer thank you!
Edit; Ontario law school but Not in toronto
UofT Law Laptop Ban
I recently learned that law professors at UofT (may??) have the option to ban laptops in their classrooms. In place, students may use regular pencil and paper, or a device such as an iPad to hand-write instead. It seems this would be disruptive to quite a few students there who typically take their notes using keyboard.
I was actually wondering for a while now, how reliable it is to mainly note-take by hand? I use to do so throughout undergrad, but I ended up buying a laptop recently because I thought I wouldn’t be able to keep up with lecture if I continued doing so😭!!! I already felt I was struggling to keep up sometimes relying solely on that method.
If you note-take, do you actually feel that you’re more engaged and retaining the info better?
Also just curious abt general opinions abt this.
I’m not going to UofT btw! Just wondering.
Is law school the right move
I am 26M in BC, and will graduate with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science in April 2027. I am a bit worried about job security in this field when I am older and have some interest in law as a pivot.
At this point, am I too old to further pursue law and is it even worth it. I can make it into fall 2027 admission for ubc most likely (90% cgpa & assume 165 lsat) but I am not sure if financially and career wise is it the right move. I am not sure what kind of salary I am even looking at as summer student/articling position and then as a full time first year, and progression from there. I'd be 30 by then likely and don't want to regret it.
What does it take to get a job in the Toronto 1L recruit?
Obviously referring to larger firms, but the ratio of 800+ applicants to only 15 offers for some firms is crazy to see. What are people doing to stand out?
When do 1L Summer jobs start posting applications?
Title. About to start law school, and just wondering when I should start applying for jobs next summer, especially for Toronto Big Law.
0L Summer internship opportunities?
I’ll be going into my first year of law school and hoping to get an internship next summer. I had one this summer and it was great but am looking for a bigger firm.
Are there any Bay Street firms that take 0Ls or should I focus my effort on mid size Toronto firms?
going into law and society
hi,
I need help. I'm going into grade 12 this year and I want to get into a law and society program (at York, Laurier, maybe??) and I'm not not sure what school would be best academically most importantly, and socially, although it's not a deal breaker.
I've seen a lot of negative stuff about both of the schools mentioned above but I just want honest opinion!!
thank u!
Law school and grades
i just wanted to know what law school was actually like when it came to grades? is it insanely difficult to get even decent grades? do they try to weed you out? alot of this curve and the possibility of getting low grades and not being able to find a job after is stressing me out considering the debt id be getting into as a prospective applicant
i just wanted to know what it was actually like. I heard its very difficult to fail but if you put in a good amount of effort can you achieve at least decent or avg grades?
especially as a first gen student who has no connections in law
Gap years before law school
Does having 4 gap years look bad to admissions? I've been working part time and studying and volunteering but still afraid the 4 year gap looks off
the job also wasn't anything fancy, just minimum wage to save up money to study
if anyones also had gap years like that, aby advice is helpful
2L Recruit Applying to firms with offices in both Vancouver and Toronto? - Risky?
Hey folks, hope everybody is hanging in there during the recruit. I'm a 2L at UofT, but I am originally from Vancouver. I am hoping to spend next summer working in Toronto, but am applying to Van firms as well just in case.
I will be participating in the Toronto recruit and put in applications a few weeks back. I've also been putting together applications for the Vancouver 2L recruit, but have recently been warned that applying to different offices of the same firm is frowned upon/risky.
I've already put the Vancouver applications together - should I even bother sending them in?
Many thanks in advance for your insights on this.
Transferring schools
Hello everyone, I had a few questions about the value of transferring law schools. I know in Canada, it doesn’t ultimately matter which law school you attend as long as you’re in a law school in the province you want to attend.
So, is there a benefit of transferring from a smaller school to a more recognized one after 1L? You would have to build up a new network, learn new profs and a new environment, but you’d have access to a more established school alumni. But do higher ranked schools have an edge in ocis, like do they get more opportunities than a smaller school would? Are the pros of switching worth the cons? If anyone has gone through this, I’d love to know your stories!
Also, if you did try and transfer, what were you looking for that made the school stand out, or what wasn’t working at your current school that you wanted to leave? Thanks everyone.
