How are you doing?

For those dealing with the 4-day RTO and no GSI, how are you all doing financially and time-wise?

With the cost of everything continuing to go up—gas, groceries, commuting, parking, childcare, etc.—but our pay staying the same, what adjustments have you had to make just to get by?
Have you cut back on certain things, picked up a side hustle, changed your budget, or found other ways to make it work?

Genuinely curious how everyone is managing the added cost and time of RTO in an already expensive economy.

Micromanaging

Since the start of RTO, I’ve been hearing stories from other agencies about increasing micromanagement—daily check-ins, daily status meetings, managers walking the aisles to make sure employees are at their desks, and similar practices.

I’m genuinely curious: what’s the purpose of this style of management? How does it improve productivity, collaboration, or team cohesion? It seems like time and energy that could be better spent supporting employees and helping them succeed, rather than monitoring their physical presence.

I’d be interested to hear from managers and employees alike. Have you found this approach to be effective, or does it end up hurting morale more than it helps?

Cost of Living

What are everyone’s thoughts on the lack of cost-of-living adjustments to keep up with inflation?

We haven’t received a GIS in years—the last increase was in 2020—and there doesn’t seem to be any indication that one is coming anytime soon. Meanwhile, the cost of housing, groceries, gas, insurance, and other everyday expenses continues to rise.

I’m interested in hearing everyone’s perspective.

CalHR Contract Negotiators

Is CalHR hurting itself as well when it rejects pay increases negotiating with SEIU, especially when those decisions also affect CalHR staff? It seems like denying competitive salary increases could make it harder to recruit and retain qualified employees across state service, including within CalHR itself.

IT Specialist I

Looking for a change in scenery and am interested in moving towards IT. I have a business admin degree. What courses do I need to take to meet the education requirements and would I have to apply as an associate first then move up to specialist or can I apply straight as a specialist? Also, how does the pay range code work? And Lastly, If my currently salary is higher than the base salary as a ITS I, would I have to start at the base salary or would my salary carryover? TIA
