[BTS] Part 2: How we engineered a stretching, one-size-fits-all monster suit on an indie budget for "Follow the Dark." SFX AMA TOMORROW at 2PM BST!

Hey r/Filmmakers, we're back with Part 2!

Building a monster is one thing, but making it run, bend, and fit multiple stunt performers when you only have the budget for one suit is a whole different beast.

In this clip, our SFX Supervisor Theo breaks down:

  • How he built a hyper-flexible, one-size-fits-all suit using a morph base and stretchable skin patches.
  • A clever latex slush-casting trick with custom dentures that gives the creature an impossibly huge, distorted jaw when it screams.

SFX AMA TOMORROW! Theo is hosting an AMA right here tomorrow (Friday, May 22) at 2 PM BST. Bring all your questions about budget-friendly practical effects, molding, skin simulation, and onset execution!

P.S. We’re currently running a Kickstarter to fund our final pickups and post-production. If you want to support practical indie horror, search 'Follow the Dark' on Kickstarter. Thanks!

[BTS] Creating the creature for our indie horror feature "Follow the Dark." We shot 90% of the film, and our SFX Makeup Supervisor Theo is doing an AMA here this Friday at 2PM BST! (Details in comments)

Hey r/Filmmakers!

We wanted to share a quick behind-the-scenes look at how we brought our creature to life using practical effects. Our director, u/MattTibby, is a big believer in the tangible dread of practical SFX (something he fell in love with while working on Blumhouse's Sinister).

Two quick announcements:

  1. Matthew is returning LIVE to my AMA tonight at 9 PM BST to answer any and all questions about the indie grind, budgeting, and how we got 90% of this feature shot independently. Come hang out and ask me anything! https://www.reddit.com/r/Filmmakers/comments/1tij5q5/ive_worked_for_blumhouse_sony_screen_gems_jerry/
  2. Our incredible SFX Makeup Supervisor, Theo, will be hosting his own AMA right here this Friday (May 22) at 2 PM BST to dive deep into the technical design, molding, and onset execution of this exact creature.

We are currently fighting through the post-production "valley of death" and running a Kickstarter to fund our final high-end post and pickups. If you love practical indie horror, search 'Follow the Dark' on Kickstarter to check us out. Thanks!

See you all at 9 PM BST for the live AMA session!

Directive 8020 - who will you get killed first?

Who does everyone think will die first in the game? (Apart from the prologue) And who has plot armour?

We’re voting for Young. Maybe Supermassive did a reverse uno and gave their star actor no plot armour? What are the chances?

Edit: fixed spelling and spacing
