Horror games

I recently got into horror games and I want a good scream. I have played fnaf 1 remake, shadows awaken and other games. I am more into disturbing games with brutal jumpscares. I don't care how much it is but I would love to have it on itch, gamejolt or steam. Thanks in advance

Wut death do u guys prefer in horror games?

I'm curious what you all prefer when it comes to game overs in horror games.

Do you like:

Instant game overs when the monster catches you (like FNAF or Poppy Playtime)?

OR

Old-school horror game overs, where you survive the attack but have to retry from a checkpoint (similar to Outlast and Amnesia)?

I'd love to hear which style you enjoy more and why.

I am looking to get some horror games before the store closes and would love some recommendations

I have the Dead Space trilogy, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles and The Darkside Chronicles, and Siren: Blood Curse.

PS: I will emulate Silent Hill (1999) and Fatal Frame trilogy instead of buying them for better quality and performance.

I just finished Silent Hill 2 (2024) and I see why people say it's scary

For context I've never played any Silent Hill game before and was very averse to horror in general but after a recent binge through a bunch of titles I really enjoyed the genre.

That was, until I opened this game.

What I used to consider scary did not do this game justice; from the start until the finish my heart rate was so high that I should've probably called my cardiologist.

While I did find Resident Evil 7 scary, it was a sort of "rational" fear, y'know with the people trying to kill you and all. But Silent Hill 2 just made me feel... off. I heard someone call it "exhausting" and that basically captures it—aside from the puzzles being nightmares the constant noise of the soundtrack, the visuals, the enemies, the fact that I don't play as a 49 year old with a one hit delete gun just made it so fucking... scary. Like, I didn't want to leave my room until it was light out again and couldn't sleep right after.

So uhm... yeah. That was just an eye-opener for me since most of what I consumed in terms of horror was watching playthroughs and Let's Plays, playing what some people (now including me) consider to be one of the scariest games of all time maybe wasn't the best idea as my first "real" horror game. The weird thing is I'm trying to find the next hit of horror-dopamine, so I guess this is me asking for recommendations?

Games with oppressive disturbing obscure dead-world atmosphere!

Like truly a world that has no god good guidance. a human exploring a world overtaken by pure evil beatifully grotesque monsters.fallen angel cosmic terrifying entities with no care for you or acknowledgement make you feel the world is pure dread and suffering

Apocalyptic want a world that feels hopeless.

Stuff not even comprehensible a true dark fantasy

Does not fear going into sensitive imagery topics rape etc

Think I have no mouth must scream,God husk, trench face, look outside(kinda want even more disturbing vibes)dark seed, giten megami tensei

Look at dogma YouTube video about god husk and vermis want games that feel like that (one title is "the greatest fantasy game never made -the venture of vermis" and the other video title (the horrifying video game that doesn't exist-the world of god husk

Can be old new indie or not please aks me more questions I been looking around so much for games like this but for some reason cant find any I guess I might have to make one my own I really want to feel like im in another world truly atmosphericly disturbing demons or entities etc monsters

Any new or unknown game you all recommend?

Just don't recommend the typical popular ones, I am down for anything new though since I'm very disconnected from new and good horror games other than resident evil of course and also Routine.

Darkwood: A Horror Game like no other

This game has no jumpscares, no cutscenes, no complex story where you are the main character. Its just a top down view game where you are in a forest and have to escape it. Thats all.

But thats why its so fresh. Right now we see blockbuster level games with cutscenes 50% of the game and it feels more like a movie than game. But darkwood is pure gameplay.

Graphics: Its cell shaded top down artstyle which is really unique and really gels with the game. After playing I felt no other artstyle would've done this game justice.

Sound: Really great sound design. You will get a eerie feeling like someone is watching, you hear distant noises or echos which really builds the atmosphere. There aren't jumpscares but hair on your arms will still standup while playing.

Gameplay and World: There is day and night here. You have to craft weapons, barricades and other stuffs to survive both. You explore the forest, meet npcs, traders, reputation system is present. Its all very well integrared and you wont feel any of it as a chore.

This is a like a short review and wanted to just put this game on everyone's radar to experience it just once if you are looking for something unique .

PS: The devs are also legends. You can browse if you are interested.

Why is nobody talking about the BrokenLore series?

I've been playing the BrokenLore series and I'm honestly surprised that more people don't talk about it.

So far they've released 4 games, and one of my favorite things is that each one is very short—you can usually finish a game in around 2 hours. They're perfect if you don't have time for long 20–50 hour games but still want a memorable horror experience

The atmosphere, storytelling, and psychological horror really stuck with me. I actually prefer these short, focused horror games over ones that drag on for too long.

Has anyone else here played the BrokenLore games? if you haven't tried them yet, I'd definitely recommend giving them a shot if you're into indie psychological horror

Modern 3PS Action-Horror: Which is the best?

It’s no question that OG RE4 was highly influential on gaming industry general, but particularly horror-action. One of my all time favourite franchises, Dead Space, was born from that influence. Both games have been remade and are fantastic. On top of this, a solid newcomer has joined being Cronos: The New Dawn, which I find has taken a lot of inspiration from both RE4 and Dead Space. Having played all 3 more than a few times now and liking them all, I found myself wanting to break down aspects of each game and compare them to see how they stack up. Keep in mind that this is solely my opinion, and you’re welcome to disagree with any of my takes!

Story

  1. Cronos
  2. DS
  3. RE4R

I’m a sucker for the Marker plagued story of the Dead Space games, so I’m surprised myself that I ended up concluding Cronos had the best narrative of the 3 games. Albeit confusing at times, it felt the most fresh and although the main villain twist was predictable, I myself did not see the protagonist twist coming. I also REALLY liked how the game ends where subsequent NG+ play throughs actually make sense, canonically speaking. For that, I feel it slightly edges DS out for first place here. As for RE4R, the story was…good enough. It felt like a typical horror/action storyline. Damsel in distress, freakish enemies, cult etc. A lot of the story (that matters) takes place in documents found throughout the game. Case in point, I completely missed who Verdugo was and his significance till I did some research. It felt like I may as well have been getting chased by an unnamed Xenomorph.

Graphics

  1. DS
  2. Cronos
  3. RE4R

DS takes the cake here and it’s not even close. The original looked great for its time but the remake looks incredible. Parts of the Ishimura look sublime. As for Cronos and RE4R, it was pretty much one or the other for last place. I found in performance mode, Cronos had slightly better fidelity. I liked the sepia tone during the Steelworks in Cronos (late-00’s piss filter advocate), and the Castle section looked great in RE4R. Other than that, both games were basically dull and grey the whole way through.

Gameplay feel

  1. DS
  2. RE4R
  3. Cronos

Again, DS wins here. Being built upon the Frostbite engine is almost cheating for this comparison given the Battlefield roots, but DS just feels so great everytime I hop back into it. The weapons, aiming, firing and movement all feel so crisp and fluid. RE4R isn’t far off DS, but feels a bit sluggish at times. Cronos feels good too, but aiming can be a bit cumbersome without weapon upgrades. What did impress me is that it didn’t feel like your typical UE game, which was an nice change,

Gameplay loop

  1. RE4R
  2. DS
  3. Cronos

The more I played RE4R, the more this game stood out above the rest. I pride Dead Space on its level of differing strategy between weapon and gameplay choices, but RE4R takes this to the next step. Between pistol headshots and melees, to knife attacks, parrying, sniping etc etc. Criticals are super satisfying and addictive. I’m not the first and I definitely won’t be the last to praise RE4R on its addictive gameplay loop. Cronos felt a bit more linear in this regard compared to the other two, where most engagements see the player typically aim and shoot for headshots. The charge up shots is a nice mechanic but it’s certainly not new or massively innovative, and although the game tries to push you to burn corpses, I almost never did. Merging enemies is also a cool addition but again, this doesn’t really offer any interesting gameplay loop other than hitting more headshots on a stronger enemy.

Replay (NG+)

  1. RE4R
  2. DS
  3. Cronos

Moving off the last category, it’s pretty much the same ranking here in regards to replay-ability. RE4R is miles ahead of the others here. The gameplay loop goes hand in hand with the challenges and unlocks. I easily did 5 playthroughs each of both the man story and SW within a week. DS and Cronos are a lot close here, and I’d of ranked Cronos higher given NG+ offers incentives in the form of alternate story endings. However, I haven’t felt myself wanting to really go back as much as the other two.

Resource management

  1. Cronos
  2. DS
  3. RE4R

Cronos is easily the winner here. Although I was fortunate in the sense I researched the game prior to my first playthrough, and went into prioritising inventory slot upgrades, I still had to really manage my resources. I couldn’t carry more than half a stack of ammo per gun, and although the game gives you the ability to run 4 weapons, I really only ran 2 for my first playthrough. Backtracking can be commonplace if you’re not strict on your resources. Dead Space can be similarly restrictive, but if you’re smart with your credits and buy suit upgrades early, plus keep your loadout to 1-2 weapons, it’s rarely an issue. RE4R is similar to DS, but a lot less restrictive. I could easily run 6 weapons towards the end of my play-through, and rarely maxed out my inventory.

Fear Factor

  1. DS
  2. Cronos
  3. RE4R

I left this for last as although it’s arguably one of the most important aspects of any horror games, I’m probably one of the worst critics to judge this. Unfortunately, nothing really scares me these days so all games basically felt the same to me. If I’m being objective about it and using feedback from other people, then DS would have to be number 1. It’s surprising to me that this game is so scary that some people can’t even make it through the whole thing. I haven’t heard any similar feedback about the other 2 so DS is number 1 here. I ranked RE4R last as there was not a single part of the game that I found even remotely scary. I’d say the same about Cronos but there was one part in the Steelworks where I had a genuine jumpscare by one of the souls communicating with you abruptly. For that, it takes number 2.

Overall

  1. DS and RE4R tied
  2. Cronos a solid third

I find myself slowly loving RE4R as much as I love the Dead Space Remake. As for which one is objectively better, it’s VERY hard to say. Both have their strengths, and very few flaws. I feel like it comes down to personal preference. RE4R feels more inciting to replay but equally, DS feels so smooth and natural. Both are equally satisfying when you’ve mastered the mechanics. Cronos is a solid game, the resource management and story probably elevate as the more ‘true horror game’ out of the 3. Unfortunately, I find its ‘unique’ gameplay aspects fall a bit short, and replay-ability only comes if you truly fall in love with the game.

Interested to hear your thoughts and why you love a particular game over the others!

What horror games do you recommend for the Steam Summer Sale?

Hello, I’m looking for some good horror games recommendations. I’ve already played every Outlast, every Resident Evil, Silent Hill 2 and f, Alan Wake, every Little Nightmares, Reanimal, both the Evil Within and both the Last of Us. I’ve also played Bendy, Eternal Evil and Dementium, but I didn’t like them. Some of this I’ve played on ps5 and the switch, but right now I’m looking for titles to build up my Steam collection. Games can be indie or AAA. It doesn’t matter if it’s first or third person.

Edit: Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I ended up picking Tormented Souls, Signalis, Darkwood and Dead Space for this sale. I’m eventually gonna grab the Amnesia franchise in the future.

What game had the best / most effective fear reaction out of you?

I'll go first:

The story of how a game gave me a concussion, lmao. Resident Evil Biohazard. I don't get phased or suprised by horrors often. I feel tense, which is why I like them, but at most I'll usually do a quick breath in or widen my eyes if i'm shocked. The same went for this game, with the exception of one moment.

It was during the section with the lady who walks around with insects flying around her. I thought I had finished the area so I spent a good 30mins backtracking and seeing if I missed any supplies.

Once I was satisfied, I remember to proceed the game I had to walk up some stairs and use a key on a door. I knew I had the key in my inventory and I that I still needed to unlock the door - so I just sprinted up to the door, with my guard completely lowered as I had been walking around this area for 30mins.

I was playing on a ps4 on my sofa. 2:00 in the morning, headphones full volume - sitting on the edge of my sofa, leaning forward with my elbows on my knees.

As I reached the door, insect lady smashes it open from the other side at 9000% volume and screams GET OUT or something to that effect.

Never in my life have I moved so fast. I literally sprung backwards, legs fully extended like a bloody frog. Smashed the back of my head into the wall (I live in U.K and our walls are basically like stone, not drywall).

I nearly "whited" out. I would say blacked out, but my vision literally turned white and sorted of faded from the edges inwards until I could just see a pinhole.

With the exception of smashing my head into the wall, i've been chasing that high ever since.

What’s The Copyright Status Of The Clock Tower Franchise?

EDIT: Found the trademark on an English website. It’s been renewed in 2024 until 2034. Capcom does not own Clock Tower at all despite collaborating with them. Sun Corporation, who own Sunsoft, are the sole trademarked owners of the Clock Tower franchise.

Does anybody know the current copyright status of Clock Tower? I know it’s currently owned by Sunsoft (after Human Entertainment disbanded) and according to a discussion on the wiki, the copyright was actually renewed last time it was checked. But that was in 2016. Almost 10 years ago.

I tried to check a couple official websites from Japan with copyright licenses, but nothing came up for both the English and Japanese Clock Tower title. But I’m not sure if that’s because I did it wrong or if it wasn’t renewed by Sunsoft or sold to another company.

Is it still owned by somebody? Or is Clock Tower now public domain?

Anyone else have The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu wishlisted?

Had a blast playing demo 3 man. Game relies on hallucination, you're not sure if your teammate is your teammate. Game releases in 9 days. Gonna overlap with me playing palworld 1.0 but can't miss it. Definitely try demo with your friends, there's only 3 maps so it gets old fast. Good for 1-2 sessions.
